Relax I’m from the Future on Amazon. Rhys Darby manages to go back in time and maybe tries to save the world. Better/deeper than it had a right to be. Not recommended, but I did manage to enjoy parts of it.
I had the opportunity to hear her give a speech when she was just making “national news”.
The big thing she was talking about was some of the things she observed with how ranchers handled their livestock to keep them calm as they were processing them resulted in her recommendation of the use of weighted blankets with some kids with moderate-to-severe autism to help calm them down.
Venom - The Last Dance - good addition to the Venom franchise. If you like the Eddie Brock Venom interactions you’ll probably enjoy this one. if you didn’t like it in the first two, it probably didn’t improve with age for you.
A shadow in the Cloud - 2020 Netflix - this movie took 1.5 hours of my life that I can’t get back. Unbelievable story, unbelievable plot, stereotypical characters, poor dialogue. I usually like Chloe Grace Moretz, but this was not her finest film.
Canary Black on Amazon. I have decided that Kate Beckinsale is the female version of Liam Neeson. She kicks ass as an action star and has mostly a bunch of no-names for the rest of the cast. She rocked this role, but it was so predictable right from the get go, that it was bit disappointing. Action sequences were very good though.
Kinds of Kindness on Amazon PPV ($5.99). This is the latest from Yorgos Lanthimos. In most cases, if you like his work, you like all his work. I didn’t feel this was the case here. There are three unrelated stories in this movie, told one at a time. Each story stars the same cast but as different characters. I think the movie is trying to say that one person’s impression of kindness is not the same for everyone else. Kind of wished I’d saved the $5.99 though. I really have loved all of his prior films too. We actually considered turning it off at one point, but decided to try and get through it.
Went to see Guy Maddin’s latest movie Rumours. More mainstream than his usual experimental stuff: my wife and I found it hilarious (although some folks here may be offended by the bogmen.)
Rather than try to summarize the plot I suggest you read the interview below with Cate Blanchet who played the German leader.
Conclave at the theater. This covers the death of a pope through the election of a new one (fictional). Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci star. From the films I have seen so far this year, director Edward Berger should be in the running for best director. Everything about the film is nearly perfect. It is a very slow burn with a huge twist. The lighting and scene setting are wonderful. There is one signature scene about 80% of the way through the movie that still stands out for me. Maybe the best film of the year as well. Will definitely tweak Catholics, so be wary if you might be bothered by such things.
Crazy funny must-see movie. However my wife’s vision is not 100% so I had to tell her what the bogmen were doing as that was a bit hard for her to see.
Based on this and Cooke’s comments and never having heard of this before, I went to look at reviews. Very 1*/5*. Either you think it is amazing or a total piece of crap. I watch both, but may wait until streaming.
Brothers on Amazon. Latest from Peter Dinklage, Josh Brolin, Brendan Fraser and Glenn Close. I watched it so you don’t have to. Twins (Dinklage and Brolin) have a mom who stole a ton of emeralds and has been on the lam for decades. Family reunion and trying to find the emeralds ensue. Not a goof film.
Goodrich at the theater. If you saw the trailer, the film is not very close to it. Michael Keaton is Goodrich, an art gallery owner with 9 year old twins and a 30 year old pregnant daughter (Mila Kunis). He is having a late stage mid life crisis. The film teeters between meh and OK.
Rough Magic on Amazon, recommended by the algorithm. From 1997, stars Russell Crowe, Bridget Fonda and Jim Broadbent. Feels like they tired to capitalize on the Noir films Crowe was doing at the time, but it comes across more as made for TV flick.
*Begin Again on Tubi. The sound track popped up in my play list recently so I went back for a rewatch. Only place I could find it was with commercials. One of my all time favorites.
Notting Hill on Peacock. Heard a song on the radio from the movie (Ain’t No Sunshine) while driving home from dinner and decided a rewatch was in order. Well spent evening.
