Pensions actuaries can leverage laws to maximize tax and pbgc savings, but that’s not really that close.

I just enjoy getting any kind of acknowledgement.

Isle of Dogs, by Wes Anderson, on Disney+

Good: Same animation as Fantastic Mr. Fox animals, and same basic humor of soft-spoken fast-talking a-list voice actors.

Bad: Some eye-rolly or off-putting jokes on Japanese style and culture. Quite dark for Disney+.

Still. I’m not that picky. I’ll sup on anything Wes Anderson has ever made. A single perfect shot or a single great song is worth more than most oscar winners.

My Octopus Teacher - Really good nature documentary. Unlike may that examine a broad subject this concentrates on the life cycle of a single octopus

News of the World - Very solid western, beautifully made, well acted.

A Love Song for Latasha - Live action short as a tribute to a girl shot by a store owner.

The White Tiger - Not really Parasite Light, but a con film where I dislike the main character too much to get into it

If Anything Happens I Love You - Cartoon short on a couple’s loss. Well done. Won’t give away more

Farmageddon - cute animated, more for the kids

I stopped watching after about 20 minutes. Too much about the documentarian, who isn’t all that interesting. Yeah, I prefer to watch nature, and I don’t want people getting in the way of the shot.

Nutcracker and the 4th realm (2018)

I was hoping I would hate it less than other disney remakes, due to the fact that Nutcracker Suite was already just a fever-dream for young girls… but… vomit vomit vomit.

Rewatched Moonlight. Odd for me as I don’t rewatch much, but I realized I had absolutely no memory of the story.

So, a good movie, not a great movie. and not a very memorable movie. Not what I would normally see as a Best Picture film, but not sure what I would put over it. I believe I was for Machester By The Sea at the time. A year for very good, but flawed films

Thunder Force - what an odd take on the super hero genre. I can’t say it was good, but I can’t say it was terrible. Just kind of meh with a few highs and lows along the way.

Collectiv (Collective) nominated for best Foreign and Best Doc. This was good. First Romanian film nominated for anything. A look at the State Hospital system after multiple preventable deaths following a night club fire. Well done, got a bit repetitive. Odd to me they use the English spelling since Collectiv was the club name, so you would think all versions would be the actual spelling, even if translatable.

Crip Camp This was more than I thought. Started with the freedom of the named camp, but morphed into a excellent story on Disabled Civil rights, with many of the same campers. Thought provoking, funny, inspiring. The Obamas may have another Oscar

I believe I have covered all the Oscar nominated movies I can find for free (legally)

strike that, a bunch of animated shorts on Youtube (I think, never sure until I try to run); a live short on Netflix and a Foreign Film on Hulu

Trial of the Chicago Seven We really enjoyed this movie. It’s not a great movie, but it’s well done and delivers what it promises. It prompted me to do a lot of research into the subject. Parallels to today are depressing.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom This movie was adapted from a play, and it shows. At its best, it has the emotional intimacy that i expect from live theater and don’t expect from movies. Boseman hit it out of the park. An extremely worthy swan song, and it makes me sad we won’t see more of him. Overall, it was a good movie. But I was disappointed that Ma Rainey’s singing was only mediocre – I was immediately disappointed by that at the very start of the film. And the subject matter is incredibly depressing. It took me a while to recover emotionally from having watched it.

TIL she was his mother.

The Lincoln Lawyer. Different than the book but I liked both.

How do you guys go about choosing movies? I feel like I can never decide what to watch… Occasionally will go based off Rotten Tomato ratings or something similar

  1. Whatever happens to be on TV. I currently have HBO, SHO, TMC, HDNet, TCM, STARZ, so I check future listings and TiVo what I want to watch/rewatch. So, my oldies are pretty set. I have “Dr Strangelove…” and “Singing In The Rain” on the TiVo for rewatching. “The Boy in The Striped Pajamas” is also on there, as I have not seen that.
  2. If I ever get around to making a list on my phone, which would be based on what I want to see before I die, then I’ll check it to see what streaming service they’re on.

I’ve got a list (just a txt document) that I add things to when I hear of something I think might be interesting. I hear of things I think I might like roughly in this order 1) here 2) cinefix and other similar youtube channels 3) Academy Award nominations 4) other word of mouth 5) looking through imdb for (mostly) directors or actors I’ve seen and have liked 6) some previews. My list has a see-it-now section and a see-it-eventually section. The list never seems to grow shorter and stuff doesn’t move from the see-it-eventually section all that often. Until fairly recently, most stuff I’ve gotten has been CDs from the library. I generally rip and return and watch when convenient. I’ve got netflix and free Roku channels now and I’m still just really getting starting with them.

Most recently, I looked at the award nominees and thought, “which of those look interesting”. Next up will be Nomadland. I also sometimes take advice from Netflix.

Oh, and I sometimes look at lists of “best movies by decade”, or whatever and look for ones I haven’t seen, or saw but don’t remember. Since I don’t see a ton of movies, that can be very effective.

Lists, lots of lists

I have something on as background while working - English only
I DVR a lot off TCM
I have Hulu, Prime, Netflix, Disney IMDB, TUBI HBO Max - Anything that fits into my categories I keep listed on my phone. If off work I tend to foreign and silent. I run through my DVR until way in front, then I tend to run through Netflix. I alsi get disks that I watch as soon as possible

I choose mostly due to “importance”; number of lists, number of awards. Then English or foreign based on when I watch them, then I also strongly dictated by run time.

Are you sorry you asked?

 No that’s helpful! Along with everyone else’s suggestions, much appreciated!
