This thread made me wonder: who grows more rice, the US or Japan? Most of what I see is from China or India, although I do see some special/premium products from the US

Wow, TIL the US grows almost as much rice as Japan. I suppose it’s more about how little Japan grows.
I thought there was a grain of truth in what Trump said because I thought I read somewhere that the rice industry in Japan exists because of protectionist lobbying by big rice.

Their system is a bit similar to Canada in relation to how it controls milk production. Its managed production to keep prices stable due to political and economic considerations, with some imports controlled by very high tariffs beyond a certain point.
The problem the US has is that its rice is seen as being very poor quality in Japan. The Japanese consumer simply won’t buy it because the differences in taste is material to them.
This has always been the case in Japan. For many years.
