Innumeracy

Hasn’t happened, but I assume that means if X scans wrong you get 1 X free, any more at full price. If X and Y scan wrong, you get one of each free. I would certainly complain if they didn’t interpret it that way. Don’t expect I to ever happen again, since the store no longer gives even one free.

I was going by this. If the wrong scanned item is free and you have more than one, it’s in your interest to get the priciest item for free. Only way to guarantee that is if you scan your items in descending cost order.

Maybe this is innumeracy or maybe it’s some secret HR code…from a job posting:

Required: 3+ years of actuarial experience in the life insurance industry
Preferred: 1+ years of actuarial experience in life insurance

…or maybe it’s just sloppy formatting.

Actually, given the salary range, maybe they’d prefer someone with less experience.

send me your email. I might be a match!

Heh.

I remember about two years after the Sarbannes-Oxley legislation (aka SOX) passed I saw a job posting that required 5 years of experience in SOX documentation. I posted about it on AO at the time.

Tangent: Does ‘X+ years’ mean ‘more than X years’ or ‘X or more year’? Would I need more than X years or at least X years?

I tried the Kroger thing today. My red peppers rung in as pomegranates. The lady in charge of the self check line and I had a flirty conversation. I still had to pay for the peppers.

I’d think X+ implies >= X

Did you grab her digits?

And get sprayed by pepper?

At least X years

More comments about this gaffe in the Critical Race Theory thread, and between the two threads I didn’t even use all from my Yahoo news feed.

Also, is it truly ‘open border’ if they were ‘apprehended?’

Not innumeracy directly, but since you brought it up my Yahoo news feed also included

Not quite innumeracy but perhaps redundant…

Yeah there are more succinct ways to say that.

I think its a marketing ploy. People see the $14.99 vs the $12.50 deal. Sneaky!

What’s the cost for 1?

What’s the cost for 3?

I think the first statement is superfluous more than redundant. That is, the first statement is included in the second, but it doesn’t address the two questions above that the second does.

How much are root beer barrels?

A: Two for a penny

How much are jaw breakers?

A: Two for a penny

How much for 1 jaw breaker and 1 root beer barrel?

A: You can’t do that !
