Innumeracy

The statement is correct except for the accidental ommission that it would be the end of the year 2135.

No, it would be more than that by more orders of magnitude than I want to count…

One quarter a day is $91.31 on avg.
To accumulate $10,250 it would take 112 years (maybe I was off by 1)

I was responding to twig

It’s sort of close to 1 quarter + 2 quarters + 3 quarters + … for a year

From an email newsletter I received today

For the 2025 coverage year, most HealthCare.gov enrollees will have at least three insurers from which to choose, a significant increase from 2021, when only 78% had that option.

not necessarily innumeracy, but they could have at least supplied another percentage.

I mean, in that 50.1% is “most” they are pretty clearly implying that 2021 was <= 50% and then contradict themselves by saying in 2021 it was 78%.

My guess is that the author originally said “nearly all” and then an editor subbed in “most” to make it shorter.

I think well before day 365 the weight of the quarters would exceed the weight of the earth.

So you think they could make more quarters than the earth has the materials for? No wonder you’re not retired yet.

No, I was imagining a Universal Paperclips scenario where we would be mining the universe with the sole mission of making quarters. I’m not retired yet simply because I haven’t figured out how to do that, so I’m still stacking quarters in smaller quantities.

From a former AO regular’s Facebook

(Put it here, but the Facebook poster knew the math was wrong, so it displays no actual innumeracy)

The guy on the right is doing his best tortoise impression with that helmet.

Figure this one out:
@Bro from Where should I go on vacation? thread

  • probably 2 weekend trips to KY / IN / IL in September / October for half-marathon weekends

“Or’s” instead of “and’s,” I suspect.

But, yeah, of all places to go, sheesh.

I’m joining him on one of those runs. Look, no inumeracy!
