Impulse control

Sometimes I see news about some person going on a murderous rampage and then being described as having poor impulse control.

But I’m like wait a minute, are all you people having murderous desires and are simply suppressing them?

That’s weird to me because I have never desired to murder anyone ever!

Oddly enough, I watched an episode of “Law and Order” last night involving a “psychological expert” who was racking up fees to testify in court cases that some defendant had dissociative amnesia that excused their murderous rampages … except in one case he knew the defendant was guilty as sin and testified in a way that the jury came back and gave a guilty verdict. The defendant’s daughter then hunted down the expert and shot him (but inadvertently killed an innocent person) and she tried to claim she had dissociative amnesia.

My weekly meeting with my counselor usually starts off with a discussion on “this week’s infuriating new threads on GOA”.

There is a rather “long chain” of impulses to be controlled before one gets to “murderous rage” state.

The fact is that if there is no control ever exercised along that chain, you get to that end state rather fast.

Three is usually the limit for a single session. I might need a followup on Friday.

Yes. I really want to put some people in their place. But I know they are clueless about their issues and it wouldn’t be as satisfying as it is in my imagination.

Presumably mine.

And then you get people who then “double down” when they realize this and try “even harder” to get reality to match their imagination.

Yeah, this.
