The old inauguration date did occur to me, but I thought that was too bizarre. I guess I was wrong.
Why was Grant the last official President? Because that’s when we went off the gold standard? (It was during FDRs first term that they moved up the inauguration date. People didn’t like Hoover staying in office for 4 months after being voted out.)
What is Trump going to do to make his theoretical next term official? Get us back on the gold standard?

All I know is what the guy said. The amendments after the 1870s were illegal, including the one that moved the date.
McConnell’s whole “sure, he’s guilty, but I’m going to vote to acquit anyway” is basically jury nullification, right?

Which do you think does this trial add republican voters or decrease republican voters?
I am curious if Republican voters would pay attention to what was said under oath if you could get Trump, etal to testify under oath. I know right wing media wouldn’t cover it so I’m not sure how to get it in front of those voters.
Guy must be smoking crack because the US didn’t go off the gold standard until 1933.
William Jennings Bryant famous “you shall not crucify man on a cross of gold” speech wouldn’t have made much sense if the US was already off the gold standard during the 1896 election.
so, Lisa Murkowski is really commendable in this. She’s up for re-election and voted against Trump anyway.

Yeah, she’s one of my favorite Congress Critters.
Murkowski’s already been challenged as an incumbent, lost her primary, and still won the general election as a write-in candidate (back in 2010 – and she doesn’t exactly have the easiest name to write in). I don’t think she’s too worried about her electoral support. Even if she loses out on the next Republican primary there’ll probably be tons of Democratic PACs running ads supporting her in another write-in campaign, just to screw over whatever MAGA candidate primaried her.
My sister from Alaska does not share your view of Murkowski.

She is not a fan. Though she said former Governor Palin was dumber than a bag of rocks.

I confused. Grant restored the gold standard. William Jennings Bryan made his cross of gold speech in 1896. FDR (who was the last president inaugurated March 4) took the US off the gold standard in 1933 and forbid the “hoarding” of gold and gold certificates. Nixon completed the separation by ending the convertability of dollars for gold by the government.
