For me Wine / Proton works brilliantly for gaming. I haven’t tried Wine on very many non-gaming applications though.

oh wow. I’m shocked it works in gaming. last time I tried it, it was hot garbage, but it’s been many many years and I just run a VM anyway. interesting.

Proton works on most games for me. I go to protondb to check before buying to make sure

So, with my wife’s disability, when she is preparing to go out, for safety reasons (fall risk) I need to stay in earshot, rather than work upstairs, in my office.

That’s part of the reason I have an old laptop, connected to keyboard and monitor set up in our living room.

We’re going to a minor league baseball game tonight, and she wanted to start getting ready. I came downstairs, and powered on the PC, intending to have the Canada-Switzerland match streaming while she gets ready.

Green screen of death. Error message: ā€œUNRECOVERABLE ERRORā€. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

Well. It had a good run. I didn’t particularly want a weekend project of setting up a replacement computer, but…

Got the new laptop, and it started some kind of ā€œrestore.ā€ Cool, maybe all my files will transfer. Then I though, "Why would microsoft know about any of my backups? I do them in Norton. I do them on a home backup unit.
There was one file in the Microsoft backup. Whee.

So, I can probably restore my last backup. Probably need to install Norton on this laptop (I prefer it to MacAfee).
Unless anyone has better ideas.

OK, new laptop now won’t let me sign in. Trying to send code to work e-mail (not a great idea), and it never gets sent. Need a ā€œpinā€ but cannot set up pin. Has my home phone as a ā€œtext the codeā€ contact.
Unless someone here knows, I’ll have to ask Dell.

It worked last night. Then, I think I ā€œlockedā€ it.

OK, so I went to the BIOS. Followed a youtube video until the point where it said to ā€œclick on the local C Drive,ā€ and no files came up. None, zero. I mean if someone asked if I could have less files, and I can say, ā€˜none; none lesser.’"

Ok, i figured it out.

Can’t get PokerStars loaded, though.

Will buy a one-wire plug-in station for bedroom, so I can watch soccer while working or playing PS. Yeah, i should just install the TV onto the wall of my office.

I’m headed on a short vacation, needed to dust off my laptop. While taking some inventory, I found my laptop, and my spouse had a laptop sitting on my shelf that was set up for her doing some work for a friend of ours. I mentioned that I’d rebuild it for our workplace (file server, etc). Then I asked her for a laptop bag. She pulls one out of her office closet and…there’s another laptop in there that’s already set up for her to work. So we have three Lenovo T540P’s, all identical hardware, one that’s a clone of my desktop, one that’s a clone of my spouse’s desktop, and one spare that I guess is going to the gym to watch yoga.

I’ve no idea how long I’ve had these laptops, but it’s been many years, I bought them used, cheap, and they’re still going nonstop.

OK, I have taken out the old hard drive of my tower, plugged it in to my laptop with the intention of copying files from old to new.
Now, I’m getting a ā€œYou don’t currently have permission to access this folderā€ notification. ā€œClick ā€˜Continue’ to permanently get access to this folder.ā€
So, I click ā€œcontinueā€ and the circle just rolls and rolls.

Any ideas?

Do I go in ā€œuser properties?ā€

OK, NM. I just copied the folder over. Then I’ll see if I can access anything.
