An 800 year old village is on the verge of being abandoned.

The nincompoops running the UK also let (and continue to let) this happen (from the article) -

- Over the past decade, 110,000 new homes were built in the **highest risk flood zones** , equivalent to one in 13 of the new homes built. Aviva calculates that if this trend were to continue, 115,000 of the government’s planned 1.5m new homes would also be in the highest-risk flood zones.

I could see a lot of people in Canada, Australia, and the US complaining about government red tape if they prevented people from building in coastal flooding zones. Or river flood zones.

We just had a bunch of wildfires here that destroyed a few hundred homes in an area with low percentages of the homes being properly insured. There’s a push beginning to have government funding rebuilding some of those people’s homes because they couldn’t afford insurance or bringing the house up to code.

On a related note, these are well-established inner suburbs that have had their 100-year flood maps updated. How dare the government not come up with a solution!

In the US, you will get FEMA aid once in your life-after that if you do not have flood insurance then you are ineligible.

At least that is how it is supposed to work

IMO, just make the flood insurance payments a mandatory part of the mortgage.

You don’t pay the flood insurance, the bank takes your house.

Once you pay the home off, you can go uninsured, light it on fire, and build a new one for all I care.

Flood insurance is heavily subsidised via taxpayers usually.

Hence the problem.

WSJ today (or yesterday) has an article about FEMA map manipulation. People don’t want to be in the flood zones so they complain to get removed. (like the summer camp in TX where people died in the flood.) and then a flood happens and…well isn’t that something.

people don’t want to pay for insurance. they want insurance, but don’t want to pay for it

I think the issue with Camp Mystic was the shelters where everyone was sleeping was in the flood plain while the main building was on higher ground. That seems ok from an insurance perspective where those shelters are basic structures that can be flooded without being damaged (like most park structures), but problematic for other obvious reasons.

This was a popular question on Exam 6 on the CAS side. A major problem with flood insurance is that is only sold through the govt as a monoline coverage and therefore can be very expensive since it is not being risk-balanced with the fire premium. I once asked for a quote for my house and the annual premium was 20% of what it would cost me to redo my entire basement.
Granted I am not at risk of a river washing my house away but the principle remains that flood insurance is higher than it needs to be.

Much of Eastern Canada has suffered through drought this year with wells drying up. Many believe this is linked to global warming and shifts in weather patterns due to climate change so I posted it here.

Of course, it is hard to prove the direct link.

I think there is great potential for Canada in the renewable energy space given that the US is abandoning it. More potential than building another pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific. I wish Alberta would support renewables a bit more.

It was a mistake to have COP 30 in Belem.

My wife has passed by the city and the infrastructure is too poor to handle a conference of this size and complexity.
