Huge floods due to heavy rain linked to the much warmer Mediterranean sea temperatures have now killed over 250 people in Spain (Valencia), with the death toll likely to be much higher as they go building by building to look for bodies.

People are very angry and they are now blaming Governments for not acting fast enough.

Having seen some video, I’m not entirely sure what could have been done. The first responders were being surprised by the flooding.

The criticism I have read is the forecasters didn’t predict soon enough and warnings weren’t issued soon enough, not so much that responders didn’t get to flooded residences/vehicles soon enough.

An additional problem is that a lot of the building in those areas was not done with flood risk in mind.

So when you get a massive downpour many areas become death traps.

And in Spain, you have regional (Conservative) vs national (Socialist) powers vying for political power so you do not get a unified response on the ground when you need one in a true emergency.

There are still roughly 2000+ people missing, so I assume the amount of dead will rise by a lot over the next couple of weeks because they have to go building by building (while still dealing with current downpours which makes things very difficult).

My actuarial org (IfoA) has released their report on the economic impacts of climate change.

Makes for grim reading.

> [@](#):
>
> The stark warning from risk management experts the [Institute and Faculty of Actuaries](https://actuaries.org.uk/) (IFoA) hugely increases the estimate of risk to global economic wellbeing from climate change impacts such as fires, flooding, droughts, temperature rises and nature breakdown. In a report with scientists at the University of Exeter, published on Thursday, the IFoA, which uses maths and statistics to analyse financial risk for businesses and governments, called for accelerated action by political leaders to tackle the climate crisis.
>
> [Their report](https://actuaries.org.uk/document-library/thought-leadership/thought-leadership-campaigns/climate-papers/planetary-solvency-finding-our-balance-with-nature/) was published after data from [the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service](https://climate.copernicus.eu/global-climate-highlights) (C3S) [showed climate breakdown drove the annual global temperature](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/10/world-temperature-in-2024-exceeded-15c-for-first-time) above the internationally agreed 1.5C target for the first time in 2024, supercharging extreme weather.
>
> Without urgent action to accelerate decarbonisation, remove carbon from the atmosphere and repair nature, the plausible worst-case hit to global economies would be 50% in the two decades before 2090, the IFoA report said.
>
> At 3C or more of heating by 2050, there could be more than 4 billion deaths, significant sociopolitical fragmentation worldwide, failure of states (with resulting rapid, enduring, and significant loss of capital), and extinction events.

Actuaries - harbingers of doom. Unfortunately, experiencing some pain now to avoid much worse pain later doesn’t get politicians elected. Much like the Californian wildfire crisis with all the controlled burning that experts said needed to happen years ago but people didn’t want it.

Not a surprise, but…

> [@](#):
>
> Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, said on Tuesday the Trump administration would revoke the scientific determination that underpins the government’s legal authority to combat climate change.
>
> Speaking on a conservative podcast called “Ruthless,” Mr. Zeldin said the E.P.A. planned to rescind the 2009 declaration, known as the “endangerment finding,” which concluded that planet-warming greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health. The Obama and Biden administrations used that determination to set strict limits on greenhouse gas emissions from cars, power plants and other industrial sources of pollution.

> [@](#):
>
> Without the endangerment finding, the E.P.A. would be left with no authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate the greenhouse gas emissions that are accumulating in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, leading to rising seas, fiercer storms, more deadly heat waves and other extreme weather events.

Europe is experiencing one the worst ever recorded heat waves over the last few weeks.

Seeing temperatures in the 42C to 47C range in Spain, France, Italy, Greece. This is +2C over average temperatures.

There are also wildfires springing up in so many places because its dry and hot.

Can’t believe the temperatures even here in London. When we lived here 35 years ago I don’t remember a single evening where it was warm enough to sit out after 8 pm. Most night are warm now.
