It was to point out that saying the temperature is going to increase without intervention is unlikely to do anything for those who recognize that temps are increasing but don’t think humans have anything to do with it.

Not so sure about that. A 2016 paper found 97% agreement on the cause. A 2021 paper found 99% agreement. We now have two more years of evidence.

The one person I already did further research on turns out that he’s basically a shill for the petroleum industry. So, I will decline to until I get a chance to dive more deeply into it. (I’m not actually that smart imo, so I try to be careful about stretching too far into things that I don’t fully understand.)

I’m shocked! Seriously though, you should expect that to be the case for the 1% that don’t agree with the rest of them.

This is my understanding of the situation.

Global warming really does represent a paradigm shift. 100 years ago, the idea that human activity could influence a geological process like climate would have been considered absurd.

Often new paradigms are only fully adopted after the old guard dies. Most of the serious climate scientists i saw over the years who objected to the hypothesis of global warming were very old 10 or more years ago. I’m guessing many of them have died.

I believe also that until relatively recently- maybe 15 years ago?- the exchange of heat between the ocean and atmosphere was not as well understood in terms of fundamental physics. Some serious researches criticized the models for being ad hoc in that respect. But i believe those issue have been worked out. (I may be remembering the details wrong but it was something like that.)

At this point, i think there are no, or almost no, climate scientists left who don’t believe global warming and are also interested in truth, as opposed to fossil fuel company lobbying efforts.

Interesting! I had heard that the current weirdness might have something to do with SO2 policies, but certainly not all of it. I wonder how much it missed the news because nobody knows how to say “our environmental policies caused warming sort of” without sounding weird.

Also good to hear Hank Green agreeing with me completely about what to do about the world. He’s a cool dude, so it makes me feel cool too. 🙂

Before the Clean Air Act was passed scientists were speculating we were going to enter an era of global cooling. That’s why all the embarrassing predictions from the 70’s no one wants to acknowledge exist. We’re going to experience the brunt of whatever is supposed to happen. I just don’t see that the world wants to really do what’s necessary to avoid them. Even people that care a lot about climate change on the internet don’t do much in their personal life so if the concern is not enough to take action with anything but other people’s money than it’s not enough concern to change the path we’re theoretically on.

Putting this in this thread, as it’s a rare enough event it may be related to climate change:

Only the 4th tropical storm ever to hit CA will happen in a few days:

Works for me. I wasn’t sure where to put the Northwest Territories fires either. However the Arctic being on fire seemed unusual enough to relate it to climate change.

The problem with negative externalities is there is a definite limit to what you can do on a personal level. In fact the limit is nothing. The most you can do is nothing.

It’s sort of like trying to save money when you live on a tight fixed budget. It’s just a matter of time before you start yelling at your spouse. Because you cutting coupons all day doesn’t make up for them eating out everyday.

And also yes, I would agree with you-- people just lack self control. Which is one reason they like having rules. Even with firm rules and gyms and personal trainers and such nonsense, the average person can’t keep themselves from becoming fat.
