Just curious, what kinda car & engine was it that bricked itself?
My brother had his Chevy equinox 4 banger brick itself on an 8 or 9 year old car that he had bought new at about 115k miles . He elected to spend $11k on a replacement engine, thinking he was more or less gonna end up with almost a new car. I’m not sure that I would have done that. I don’t recall what calamity caused his engine to brick, and I don’t recall the word timing chain being involved.
But your experience is a reminder to everyone to have their timing chains inspected and replaced at recommended intervals. Had you done that?

If either a timing belt or timing chain goes it’s usually catastrophic engine failure.
You are right that timing belts generally require periodic replacement to help mitigate this risk.
If someone is going in to inspect the timing chain, they might as well replace it. It involves a lot of replacing gaskets and such.
So, I go to a local Toyota. Their C-HR XSE choices all include a security package and some kind of paint protection. $1300 more. What if I or any other customer doesn’t want those? Why did you add them? DID you in fact actually add them? Can you un-add them?
So, with those additions (plenty more from the factory as well), total will be around $43K.
However, as I walk in there is a GR Corolla for $40K. … Choices, choices.
Might have to convince the little lady to consider Hyundai/Kia. They have some EV cars (not so much CUV/SUV styling) for less. Used for $23K.

I’m out $300 on oil changes for my two vehicles. Synthetic, and extra oil for one of them. Hopefully that’s it for another year.
The added required maintenance for an ICE/hybrid is making the EV choice a little more acceptable. Like, every year for the next 20 years is $6000 (need to PV it, but still).
$300 was really 120 + 180 (two cars), but your point is still valid. Proabably more on tires for an EV, but less on brakes and all the fluid changes.
FWIW, I had my Tesla three years before I did any maintenance. Which was like $200 for six (six!) cabin air filters. It’s kind of nice.
And yes, the extra weight isn’t great for tire life. Or the fact that I have a monumental amount of torque, that’s my big problem for tire wear, but it’s my doing.
Family is up to 5 kia/hyundais.

According to AAA, the average maintenance cost is around 35% lower for EV vs ICE. The tire replacement for an EV will be more expensive but the added complexity of ICE ends up being more expensive overall.
I guess I need to maintain my cars better, because I have never spent anything close to 949 a year in maintenance. I even a bit skeptical that I should even bother changing the synthetic oil out once a year, given the mileage that I drive.
In any case, not a major expense category for me.
