Future Diversity of the Oscars discussion

Oooooh. Yeah I read it wrong for sure.

Save me the read.

If a movie is a period piece in which you would expect no minorities

Can it be up for best picture?

By a certain proportion of minority staffing?

Like Hamilton?

That was going to be my post. The filmed version on Disney+ has a black George Washington.

I mean, is there really a reason any actor can’t be cast in any role? Wasn’t Glenn Close a pirate in Hook?

And Morgan Freeman was cast as an Irishman in Shawshank Redemption.

This is an unfortunate whitewashing of history by Hollywood over the years.
The “period pieces” should not be as white as what you are used to seeing.

Verisimilitude?

Especially for historical figures. I mean, could Penelope Cruz plan John F Kennedy? Could Michael J Fox play Marie Curie?

Currently reading Anne Frank, do they need a black person hiding with them?

She’s an ethic minority. You’re cool.

Assuming Jews are not included

You might be good if some of the Nazi soldiers are Mexican men or women from Sri Lanka.

Interesting concept . . .
:sunglasses:

Wait. I guess they aren’t included:

At least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors is from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.
• Asian
• Hispanic/Latinx
• Black/African American
• Indigenous/Native American/Alaskan Native
• Middle Eastern/North African
• Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander
• Other underrepresented race or ethnicity

I’m too lazy to do this myself, but it would be interesting to see how many past winners (or nominees) would have qualified under these rules, or which ones would have been disqualified.

I still don’t know what movie won. I know Will Smith won something for King something for best actor. That’s about it.

Interestingly, deaf people don’t seem to be an underrepresented group

most of the people on the AO are deaf

.

Would Drive My Car or Parasite have been nominated?

I know it says Asian, but it is stupid if they are Asian productions

Are you intentionally being obtuse?

Four criteria
On screen cast is only one of them.

Sorry this is hurting you for some reason.

This is stated as an item that “will be addressed separately” in the academies statement
