Ours was on the blacktop portion of the playground. Would have loved to have dirt and/or grass to land on when you lost your grip.
But we also had a witches hat. That one was taken down while I was at that elementary school.
This is what ours looked like, except again, it was on the blacktop part of the playground. I was never really scared on the merry-go-round even when I was holding on while my friends made it go faster and faster and I was flying out there parallel to the ground. But on the witches hat when they would get that thing going fast and I was holding on to that thing a good 10 feet up in the air, that was when I thought I might actually die if my hands slipped.
