Maybe she only started finding mistakes a year into their relationship. He might be right on this!

That sounds about right. A year into a relationship is about when the quirks you found cute at first start becoming annoying.
When people mention about the start buttons for their cars, I have to explain to them that those aren’t new. My dad had a truck with a start button when I was growing up. Still had a key but you would turn the key to the on position then pull the choke and push the start button to engage the starter.
