Well to be fair, the Bible does NOT say “whale”. In English it typically says “large fish” or “great fish” and the Hebrew word is generally understood to mean “sea creature” I’m told.
The misnomer “whale” may come from the fact that a whale shark (which is a species of shark, not whale) is one of the few known species that would be capable of holding a human in its mouth in tact and then spitting it out relatively unharmed.
The human would not make it to the esophagus or stomach of the whale shark though… at least not without some miraculous divine intervention.
