My grandfather was a handyman for a bottling company, and among other things, he painted advertising signs, including billboards. He had some flyers/product info sheets on how to add lead to paint. It definitely added durability to the paint. Too bad it is terribly poisonous.
In 1942 my dad was working in a factory. He mentions to a coworker that he thinking of enlisting.
The guy says, you’re safe, as long as you work here you can’t be drafted, wait it out.
As he is leaving the factory, a supervisor at the door is asking to see everyone’s hands. He showspalms up, they ask to see the backs.
When he gets outside he asks his friend what was that all about. The guy tells him they are looking for nail discoloration to check for lead poisoning.
He says, I’ll take my chances in the army and enlisted the next day

Reminds me of a temp job I had one summer. A repair center for industrial (forklift) batteries. Rechargeable lead acid batteries ranging from 750-4200lbs. I got the gig because a full time guy was off with pay for 3 months due to high lead levels on his required periodic test.
