Fishing with nerds

I took an alumni turkey hunting yesterday. Heard lots, had two hens run past, but otherwise nothing.

This is from my son hunting two fields over:

The hen attacked his decoy for an hour, even stopping for rests. And all the activity kept the big toms away.

The idea is to shoot only the males. But since we can’t actually sex the males before shooting, they use the presence of a ‘beard’. If the turkey has a beard - a tuft of hair sticking.out of it’s chest, it’s legal to shoot. No beard, no shoot. And of course,.some hens have beards and some toms don’t. Anyway, if you look.at the video, this is a bearded hen - so legal. Not preferred, but legal. And after an hour my son called it and took the hen.

We are going out tomorrow morning with another student.

This is hilarious. I am not sure I would have made it an hour to make the decision your son did

Me either. But my son is at the point where he’s fussy. Hes using a bow this season, and looking to get a big tom.

Meanwhile I’ve never bagged a turkey yet, and chances get slimmer every year. Because now I’m taking out students and they’re using the gun not me.

A fun morning, took two students turkey hunting.

Across the fields and set up an hour before sunrise, saw a coyote as we were getting set up. Listened to the turkeys gobbling in the trees as the sun came up.

Two hens ran past. Then over the hills, we see two big toms strutting and gobbling. They slowly made their way towards us then hung out just out I range, strutting and gobbling.

Walked away, then came back, again just out of range. Finally they sauntered off back into the bush.

We watched a couple deer bound across the fields.

Then 20 mins later, the toms reappear, right behind our blind. One walks around 5 yards from the blind, and out front. Ammar shoots it, and it drops.

So we are sitting in the blind hoping the other Tom will make an appearance. And I look over at the dead bird, and… Is that it’s head sticking up like a periscope? I barked at ammar shoot it again! But before he could the damn thing jumped up and took off across the fields. Healthiest turkey I’ve ever seen lol.

I’m taking my dog and two students about a 9 hour drive north this weekend, camping on crown land and fishing.

Weather on Friday, sunny and 25c. Saturday, rain all day. Sunday, chance of snow flurries lol.

I’ve been to this place at this time of year before and had 3 feet of snow but was hoping to avoid that this time

Up to a farm?

Asking for younger siblings.

Not a farm.
Most of the population lives along the canada-us border, like 90%. Once you drive about 4 hours north, private land goes.to close to zero, its all public lands or what we call crown land. Free camping, just grab a spot anywhere. Its not intuitive just how remote canada gets, as quick.as.it.does, for how large of an area. The vastmajority of canada is uninhabited wilderness.

I know a spot thats got some campsites carved out on the edge of a lake. Its stunning. And the walleye are spawning so theyre all in one spot which makes for easy fishing.

The weather matters because we are in a tent. But, i have a woodstove so we.will be warm and dry.

Itll be an adventure for the students. They wont be prepared for the remoteness. Im pushimg them to be prepared for the cold, but we will see.

Good weekend for pickerel.

The weather was.worse than expected. Saturday was huge rainfall. Saturday night the wind seemed like hurricane level; I didn’t sleep that night because I was worried about the tent. Sunday we had snow flurries and the lake was too rough for my boat so we packed up and came home.

Picture 4 is a uniquely Canadian method of fishing.

Yeah, down here we just use dynamite.

I thought that was more of an Aussie thing.

a man in a cowboy hat is rowing a boat in the water

Anywhere there is mining, really. So maybe more here, and battery in East LA.

Good day on lake Simcoe, got about a half dozen, finished the day off with a trip to bass pro!

@Mountainhawk second picture is Friday. Which won’t make sense to anyone else other than MH lol.

I’m taking four students trap shooting tomorrow. deep in the heart of redneck territory lol. I’m taking a charcoal BBQ so we can have a tailgate lunch, that’s always fun. hot dogs on charcoal, in the sun, awesome.

except two of them are Muslim, so no hot dogs.

ok, I think the halal store sells beef skewers. I’ll do those instead. not quite as good, but fine.

then I looked at the one guys name,.clearly Indian and my Spidey senses are tingling. yep, no beef for him, only chicken.

so now I’m headed to the halal store to see what I can get that’ll work on the BBQ. I’m thinking maybe chicken wings.

and chicken wings it is. I’ll serve the wings, then I’ll complain about cultural appropriation. what’s with Indian people eating the food of my people?

Nice catch! Love all the perch!

The blond girl got laid off a few months ago and is looking for work. related, she wants me to start taking her hunting. I’m always one to suggest being an entrepreneur, so I told her I’d take her hunting, and she should start a channel.. put her marketing ideas to work.

I gave her two or three ideas for her first few videos. I also volunteered my sons time, he does a lot of semi professional video and production of hunting videos. suggested I’d get him to come along for a couple. plus he’s got a reasonably successful hunting channel. I’d have him introduce her on his channel, that would get her subscribers started.

basically she’s young, pretty, smart, and outgoing. a good recipe for success in the make dominated hunting industry.

she texted me last night, she’s seriously considering it.
