Shit, you like hot weather! I’d never want to live in any of those places. Last time i was invited to a fun event that was taking place in palm springs i declined to go, because i didn’t want to deal with palm springs in July.
Are they suggesting that you contribute to the kid’s Roth IRA?
I meant more so that a 529 is a good vessel if your kid does go to college and is essentially the same as a Roth IRA should your kid get a full ride. But with a Roth IRA, you can withdraw contributions (not gains) tax-free regardless, and put them toward college, like a 529. So if you saved $5,500 * 18 years, you have $99,000 of contributions for college and a metric butt-ton of gains for retirement.
I might be missing something, again, I have not needed a 529 yet.
Although I’m excited to contribute $X towards a future child’s IRA, even putting <$1000/yr in to match their summer job would set them up so nicely..
To be fair, the theory is that you’re investing the money.
Yeah my theory is lame.
It’s not lame to want to avoid saving a bunch of receipts and dealing with the hassle.
But it does have a small financial advantage if you’re willing to fuss with it.
Well my idea is that, I’d rather live in the sun and travel elsewhere for rain/snow/seasons, than to live in the rain/snow and travel for the sun ![]()
Yeah, my ideal is that I never have to cope with weather too hot to want to leave AC. I don’t live that far north, but I’d be okay with it.
My husband keeps telling me he wants to hire a financial advisor. I keep telling him what a financial advisor would tell us to do, and that we are doing it. Finally I told him I was really offended that he didn’t trust my judgment on this issue. He hasn’t bugged me about it since.
chalk that up as a mega win
“Dude, I am your financial advisor.”
“You… do know what my job is, right?”
Right? The reason he thinks we need an advisor is that our finances are not what they should be. Our finances are not what they should be bc he is a spender and I haven’t stood my ground in the past. But—poor mr aj—I’m in therapy now. I am learning to stop shying away from conflict…
Financial pyramid.budgeting and cashflow comes before investing. You can’t invest until you have control of spending.
That’s something I have a really hard time with as well. I have a brother I barely ever speak to because he’s too confrontational - it gives me too much anxiety to be around him.
I also married somebody who is pretty spendy. We’ve gotten to a middle ground where they are more reasonable and I’m less uptight about it. But I just funnel money directly into 401k/investments immediately so we “don’t have” the money. I can always sell stocks if we actually need money, but looking at my bank account I don’t see extra cash to spend.
Yep. Thankfully I started dumping $ into a 401k when I was a baby actuary. I could have done more but our retirement accounts are generally ok.
Best money we ever spent was on a professional advisor who stepped us through budgeting. Two strong minded people, we didn’t do well agreeing on where to cut.the pro took the emotion and control issues out of the equation.
In the end, we didn’t really have to cut. The pro basically pointed out that we were spending $30k a year on bullshit. And eating out, that was a shock when I saw the final number. Now I’m I get whiny when it comes to going out to eat just because I despise the overall cost.
We didn’t take advice on investing. I’m decently well read on index investing and asset allocation.
So Mr. AJ just gave you what you wanted right? An opportunity to step up as financial advisor by establishing some sort of budget to rein in his spending.
Yep. Planning to go through August budget tonight. I’m weirdly excited. He also asked for some projections on some debt we have. I’m ready.
Also since this was work, he has been helping more with the cooking to free up some time for me. Win win.
I agree about having a pro take the emotion out of things if there’s conflict.
I also use pros because even though I know a lot and do fairly well, I always learn something. ![]()
That said, I use the pros with the companies I invest/bank with. I don’t pay an independent advisor.
