Is the text of the nondisclosure agreement anywhere that’s easy to link? I think that would be helpful in determining what’s okay to talk about.
I didn’t catch any specific wording in the problem to suggest any novelty in the problem? I just found CPDLD and multiplied by expected future loss, but maybe I’m oversimplifying or missed something.
I thought the Taylor question could’ve been a little more specific in how we should format our letters. I wasn’t sure if they wanted math notation or if we could describe with words what each item was.
I struggled on one of the Patrik problem in linking each item to the claims table, but am hoping the accepted answers allow us refer to the general background as well (ie reporting rules), not just the table.
Did the Shapland residual question mess up in giving us unscaled residuals or could we have adjusted somehow given info in the problem?
I thought the calc questions were very straightforward but now you guys are making me feel I’m thinking I missed some stuff.
Struggled on Brehm 4 strategy question and t copula. Also didn’t have time to come back and answer which reinsurance method was better.
If the calc questions are as slam dunk as I thought and they don’t move from the historical pass marks then I’ll pass, otherwise I may be in trouble.
(Mods I hope the above is in accordance with appropriate non disclosure, otherwise please let me know)
Can anyone jog my memory on the Verrall topic that was tested? I don’t remember that Q at all.
Was there an unusual topic tested for Hurlimann? I thought it was a straightforward question but may be misremembering.
The Shapland question threw me off so hard. I’m still honestly not sure if that question was defective or if I’ve missed something in the paper that would have let us use the info they gave.
Were you able to compute standardized residuals? I didn’t see a way, and that’s what’s supposed to be used for sample values.
Now that I think about it more, I think they have to be standardized, otherwise they’re biased. Which we could do by adjusting with the DoF factor, which we can calculate.
I remember from my notes that going from scaled to standardized residuals adjusts for theoretical heteroscedasticity. Since were already adjusting for heteroscedasticity explicitly, maybe that’s why we don’t need standardized residuals.
Whatever the correct treatment of this was in the problem, I’m guessing there’s not a lot of point value assigned to it.
I thought Pearson Residuals = Standardized (Pearson) Residuals? I think I had read in Shapland that only Standardized Residuals can be used when applying hetro adjustment factors and resampling.
The DoF adjustment just turns the Unscaled to Scaled residuals, but Shapland only ever mentions using Standardized Residuals, so I’m still not sure on that one.
I have a feeling that it’s embedded in the Exam itself. Perhaps you could work with the Powers-that-Be and see if they’ll post them on casact.org?
Copied from an email the CAS sent:
Candidates must not give or receive assistance of any kind during or after the examination. Any cheating, attempt to cheat, assisting others to cheat, participating therein, or engaging or appearing to engage in improper conduct such as noted in the CAS Examination Discipline Policy is a serious violation and will result in the CAS disqualifying the candidate’s exam and additional consequences determined by the vice president-admissions. This may include a temporary or permanent ban from sitting for CAS Examinations. Members of the CAS are also subject to the CAS investigative and discipline process, such as through the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) or the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA), for any violations of the CAS Code of Professional Conduct. Candidates have agreed in their applications for examination to be bound by the rules and regulations governing the examinations.
Examples of improper conduct include but are not limited to:
- Improperly obtaining or providing examination questions before or after the examination or aiding someone else to do so.
- Using an unauthorized calculator (as defined in the Syllabus) or other mechanical aid that is not permitted.
- Having access to or consulting notes, books or other unauthorized materials or devices during the examination.
- Talking or otherwise communicating with another candidate during the examination.
- Disturbing other candidates during the examination.
- Consulting other persons during the examination.
- Copying questions, answers, or answer choices to take from the examination.
- Taking any of the laminated spiral notebooks from the examination room.
- Arranging to have another person take an examination for the candidate.
- Threatening or physically or verbally abusing a supervisor or proctor responsible for curbing or reporting improper conduct.
- Disclosing the contents of an examination to any other person without authorization from the CAS. This includes but is not limited to, discussion on internet forums or social media.
- Presenting false information on an examination application.
- Failing to remain in the examination room for a minimum of two hours during the examination (for examinations with this requirement).
- Failing to follow other examination instructions.
- Accessing or using a communication device (cell phone, tablet, etc.) during the examination or while at the examination site.
- Interfering with the operation of CAS network system, examination platform, or server, including but not limited to accessing or attempting to access examination results through unauthorized means before the official release of results by the CAS.
- Conducting or engaging in any other improper activities that affects the integrity of CAS examinations as determined by CAS.
I acknowledge and agree that I am prohibited from sharing or transmitting information about CAS examination questions or content in any form to any person or entity at any time, either prior to, during, or following the examination, and that my failure to comply with this prohibition, or to report any information about suspected violations of such prohibitions, or otherwise about any possible examination irregularities by myself or others, may result in legal action against me and my scores being cancelled or my certification being revoked in accordance with CAS policies and procedures noted above.
Yeah, reading over this again, point 11 makes me think I should avoid talking about anything. “The contents” could be as simple as the topics. I think the spirit of the NDA is to not give any information to people who haven’t taken it that sitting and to not give specific questions to people after the exam sitting, but I’m just gonna play it safe and bide my time and wait for results.
This seems to be the relevant part:
I forgot most of what I tested over a month ago. I have the hardest time waiting for exam results.
Yeah, I’m getting tired of waiting.. I’m really hoping results will come out in the next couple weeks, but that may be a bit optimistic.
I’m hoping the latest it will be is Jan 29th
The normal window ended 12/9 and it usually takes 6-8 weeks. Since the holidays fall in the grading period and some people sat later in December, I’d guess it’s going to be more on the 8 weeks end of that, so I’ll honestly be surprised if they come out in January.
Considering they STILL haven’t released grades for the MAS exams we could be in for a treat
They’re probably waiting on MAS to release them all at once
