Keep in mind that the advice in this thread is given by the top legal minds in the country
No. All out of state sales are self restricted by the dealership. I just happen to be interested in a particular model that is a hybrid. I thought by mentioning that it was a hybrid, it qualifies as an “electrified vehicle” and this was appropriate for this thread.
No this is a nationally available model, but it is high demand & low supply so searching dealer inventories out of state is something I did.
I don’t think so. I think the negotiation tactic is “We won’t discuss price over the phone, you must come into the dealership to get our best price.”
I was hoping her answer was going to be the price of the car is sticker price. I was more likely expecting “sticker + a few thousand”. Either way, I am not interested in driving 350 miles one-way to a dealer only to be told in the flesh that the price is sticker + 6000. Then I drive 350 miles home in my old car.
But she was more coldly matter-of-fact by stating “We won’t sell you a car”.
Furthermore, she has been radio silent since I admitted I live in another state. She is not responding to messages.
I just think that this reeks of discrimination and cannot be legal - which was the follow up message I sent her to which she has not responded.
You can discriminate, just not for any legally protected reasons. She can refuse to sell you a car just because she doesn’t like you.
Well, it’s DeepPurple. That’s entirely possible.
(I kid because I love!)
Which manufacturer is the vehicle in question? If it is self-imposed by the dealership, is the mfgr/dealer relationship the source of the (presumably) financial disincentive the dealership has in selling to you?
It’s a Toyota, which I would assume is large enough to rise above squabbles like this.
Sometimes I marvel at the number of people who think I’m an a-hole. Then I cry myself to sleep
I am somewhat curious about the why. I’ll ask some dealership folks I know (not Toyota) if they know what’s up. I know CA has rules about fleet avg MPG, and maybe the mfgr wants to keep a hybrid in state, or maybe the dealership doesn’t want the hassle of filing out of state paper work. Maybe they figure it’ll sell local quickly enough they can be lazy. DP being an ahole seems irrelevant to this, however (j/k, always took you as more of a dbag than an ahole
).
Mostly this.
Probably a different form for each state.
yes, as dealers usually register the car, apply the plates, etc., I assume it’s a new hassle for every state they sell to. If the dealer knows it will be easy to sell the car in-state, they may have just decided to not bother talking to out-of-state customers.
I would speculate some combination of: paperwork (as stated above), trying to build some goodwill in the community by selling local, and perhaps most likely is if you live a long ways away they have zero shot at future revenue servicing said vehicle.
New record for fastest 0-100 kmph time for an EV (not a production car), 0.956 s. Distance traveled during that period, 12.3 meters.
In a vehicle this small it helps to have a light driver. I think she weighs the same as my right leg.
I watched that, it’s staggering. Given that the whole vehicle weighs something like 300lb the battery must be just large enough to do a run. It’s still impressive but it’s obviously a vehicle built for exactly one thing. I also appreciate the EVs they have doing the Pike’s Peak and Goodwood hill climbs.
And I have to say, every time I mash my accelerator to the floor in my Model Y Performance, I’m still blown away. It’s this weird, hydraulic kind of thrust with no noise and no shifting, just brute force.
That will give me extra incentive to lose weight. Gotta have that acceleration.
Lol, i’ll never be closer to 40 kg than after cremation.
This is an article from 14 years ago. The big 3 have had plenty of warning about EVs (the article talks about how GM even launched an EV in 1996 but it didn’t work out), and some of the problems that are now being raised by UAW.
Such a long article about a boring (no pun) person. Where is the part I quote above?
Roller coaster mode is what I call it.
