Your usage is different from average.
So, do not use your usage as average for all.
We have a second car that is a hybrid, should we decide to take longer trips.

Anywho, looks like whatever the range is, drop it 80% for granny freeway speeds (not Pasadena-style grannies) and AC.
The extra 20 miles (total r/t) to a tasting room really made the difference.

At the RV camp, someone had a Rivian towing some new-fangled RV. “Pebble Flow.” Comes with an extra 45kWh battery to help with towing.

I will concede that my need for more than just a sedan/hatchback arguably makes my comparison atypical.

However, I do have a very clear memory of the calculator showing break-even annual mileages, because I remember playing with that and seeing there were some states where the math worked out for me, and others where it would have made sense with prior driving patterns (15-18k miles/year) but not current.

“See… dan”? That’s a type of car??
Most EVs are SUV-style. They have to be, in order to include a big enough battery, which is a factor in the range, which is apparently a big selling point (for single-car families, with home charging).
(Selling point should be miles per kWh (higher is better), or in Canadian, kWh per 100km (lower is better).)
Overall average for my car is 3.8 m/kWh, with which I am happy, for now.
A shorter car would do better (lower drag), as well as a motor that restricts rocket-take-off speed. 2WD versus 4WD would help with mileage (my car is AWD, I think). I’d like my car lowered about 4 inches, but there might be issues with the battery being too close to the ground.

Do you have an electric dryer near your garage? If so, that usually requires 220V, and you can use that outlet. If it is not close, then yeah, you’re S.O.L.

The VW Tiguan (ICE) and ID4 (EV) are roughly the same size as each other. I couldn’t get data for 2026 models but Edmunds had 5 year cost of ownership for 2025 models - Tiguan at $46.3K and ID4 at $49.1K. This was by zipcode so will vary slightly if you put in a different zipcode.

Just found the Department of Energy calculator – [Alternative Fuels Data Center: Vehicle Cost Calculator](https://afdc.energy.gov/calc/)

It goes out further than Edmunds, but doesn’t consider residual resale value.

For Connecticut, at 15k miles/year, 60% highway, and current gas prices:

 ![image](https://community.goactuary.com/uploads/default/original/3X/4/6/465f3f0e154abada7e98af1714c27110cd1cc4d8.png)

…which I’d consider essentially a wash. If we were to assume, however, that current gas prices are unusally high…

With my usage:

 ![image](https://community.goactuary.com/uploads/default/original/3X/4/1/41beccc20a43b6d515c2216fc383ac85ab15a8d3.png)

I’ll probably use my actuary skills and do a better comparison when I do get closer to actually buying the next car. For a few reasons, I’d be willing to pay a bit of a premium on a TCO basis, but…there is a limit.

Looks like the proposed limit will be 350,000 compared to 800,000 this year. There were around 10.5 million new car sales in the EU in 2025 so around 3% of sales for the proposed limit.

I couldn’t find Japanese sales for EU but Toyota group sold 1.2 out of 13.3 million (around 9%) in Europe (including non-EU countries). 3% for the entire country of China is pretty low in comparison.

OK, another jaunt to the Central Coast this weekend. Planning way ahead (wouldn’t have to do this with the hybrid). In Pismo/Five Cities Area, there are several chargers to get us back home with no issue. Just need to find one near something interesting.
So, assume 250 miles on a fill. Would need about 50-100 miles of charge before coming home.
Sheesh. So much planning. Don’t want to make the mistake I made last time.

Never discussed: how your Tesla determines this. You don’t get to ask.
So, ask Googly-AI’s

> Tesla determines when cabin air filters need replacing based on **time-based manufacturer schedules** , **physical indicators** , and an **in-car filter health score** accessed via the vehicle’s service menu.
>
> **How the Car and Owner Track Filter Status**
>
> - **Time-Based Schedule:** Tesla officially recommends replacing standard cabin air filters every **2 years** (or every **3 years** for vehicles equipped with HEPA filters). > - **Service Mode Health Score:** Newer software features let you check an estimated **filter health score** directly on the car’s touchscreen:
> - Open the car’s **Software** menu, long-press the model name (e.g., “Model 3”), and type **“service”** as the password to enter Service Mode.
> - Navigate to **Thermal → HVAC** to view the current health percentage of the cabin filter (a new filter starts at 100% in green, degrades into yellow/orange as it collects debris, and turns red when heavily restricted).
> - After installing new filters, you must manually **reset the filter score** to 100% in this same service menu

Hopefully they’re as easy to replace as my old car and my Lexus: just behind the glove box. I did mine after 100K+ or so. Yeah, they were pretty ratty.
Our new EV has no glove box, so, we’ll see in a few years.

The cabin air filters aren’t too bad to replace, they are tucked under the console near the front floorboards. The HEPA filters are under the frunk hood, not terrible to replace but it takes maybe 30-60 minutes, as I recall.
