Since the 2024 World Championship was just in my town I thought I’d start a thread on disc golf.
I’ve played at both courses (Ivy Hill, New London) that the champs played on. Disc Golf is VERY popular here. If it weren’t for my vacation timing I’d have volunteered at the event. I had plenty of friends volunteer though.
Great community! I’ll bring three discs when I travel (Driver, Mid-range and a putter).
I am still awaiting for the “Ace”. I’ve come close several times.
I grew up playing disc in our bland suburban park, with occasional trips to good wooded courses.
It was and still is a way to connect with my brother, who is not into sports, and my dad, who is way into sports.
Wonderful game. Basically, what if golf was (more of) a nice walk in the woods. With no cart, no gear, no fairway, no green, no fees, no bullshit whatsoever, besides tossing a random object in a random direction every once in a while.
I’ve never seen a competitive game. I imagine it would be kind of weird, since it’s so casual by nature.
I need to get out and play soon. It’s been awhile. My cousin is a pro, playing mostly up in Northern California. I’ve gotten to play with her a couple of times. It’s amazing to watch someone who actually knows how to throw.
Weaselette’s mom lives right down the street from one of the first disc golf courses (opened in 1969!). They have 2 full courses in a lovely park in La Mirada. I usually sneak in a round when we visit.
Some AO history - I threw a couple of rounds with Cohete in Vegas when a bunch of us met out there to play poker.
Last I played it was through someone’s farm. It was a beautiful walk through woods and fields and hills, and past some horses. We waved hello to the farmer.
The time before, was up and down the side of a mountain. A close friend joined us and smoked weed, talked about video games, and picked wild mushrooms.
I am friends with folks that have two private courses on their property. Mays Mill and Goliath. My homebrew club provides homebrew to them periodically. The homebrew club also holds an annual “Brewers Cup” Tournament. We serve like 6 different homebrews for at least 100 players. I make the Mays Mill Kolsch. Like I said - great community!
