Define "need"

We (in my household) break things down between want and need based on our current circumstances.

Needs are things that will allow us to maintain the lifestyle.

The basketball I got my son: need. He needs it for basketball camp.
Basketball camp: need. He needs to keep active
Are there alternatives? Yes. Cheaper? Prolly. But it maintains the status quo.

My automobile: need. I need to drive to work. Status quo.

Cable TV: need. Entertainment keeps us sane.
Cheaper alternatives? Prolly. But it’s what we are used to.

High speed internet: need. See above. And you try and have a pre-teen boy and not have a video game system.

My wife’s Echelon bike. Want. She likes at-home spin and exercise classes.

iMac: want. Better than M$ Windoze.

I guess all anyone really NEEDS is a bare minimum of food & water, some clothing and protection against the elements. Maybe some sort of basic income in order to achieve that. But as quality of life goes up incrementally, so does what you need. Often what you want will raise your perceived quality of life somewhat. When that raises up, the needs to maintain that go up. Then you’re needs ramp up, etc.

If you really only want to live on the basics, go commit a crime in Central America. Their jails will feed, cloth and house you to the bare minimum.

“Needs” are those things that keep you out of poverty.

“Wants” are those things that make you rich.

:man_shrugging:

many times wants are what make you poor.
