1 down took me far longer than it should have to get that last (that is, first) letter.

I gave it 5 minutes and gave up. I was stuck on “sound” right at the beginning that I assumed was “noise” and I never progressed, even though I inferred that the duck clue was eider.

I did not have to guess. There was a point where deciding between which iteration of a matching pair to use I noticed that one of the choices resulted in the remaining isolated shapes being left with an odd number of squares, which wouldn’t allow the rest of the puzzle to be completed. After that it was mostly straightforward I think. Unless I didn’t see a forced trial and error and happened to guess without realizing it…

I got through it without having to guess. There was always a spot or tile somewhere where only one option remained.

Yeah, knowing these puzzles now, I should have said “I know I missed something” instead of “I don’t know if I missed something”.

10/8/2021
Three of these objects have six-letter names and three have four-letter names. From each longer word, subtract the letters of one of the shorter words to get two leftover letters. For example, WICKET minus KITE leaves CW. Rearrange the six leftover letters to make a final word. What is the final word?

We did a similar puzzle on 1/12/21.

I initially spelled sphinx with a y and that confused me for a little. And I thought it was a scarab at first. But it was pretty clear fairly fast that both had to be wrong.

10/9/2021 - PLUS ONE
Add the same letter to each four-letter word and rearrange the letters to spell a five-letter word. Write the words across, one letter per square. The added letter must always fall in the shaded square

10/10/2021
Insert the numbers 1 to 9, one per square, so that no two consecutive numbers are in squares that touch in any way, even at a corner. Three numbers have been placed to get you started.
