I’d argue that the description is misleading. I thought the secret phrase would not include the T and S, since those were not gray. When I revealed OOTHP, I figured I had something wrong.
Yeah, the description is wrong, but it seemed pretty clear to me that we had to include them with the shaded ones or there’d have been no reason for the letters to be there.
That’s my fault. In the original puzzle, the T and S are shaded. I just didn’t copy it exactly. Sorry!!
9/18/2021 - ACID TEST
A bottle contains 210 milliliters of an acid-water solution with a concentration of 20% acid. How many milliliters of acid do I need to add to this solution to change the concentration to 30% acid?

Add the same letter (represented by the question mark) to the letters in each “pie slice” below and then rearrange them to form a common English word for each slice. What are the four words?
9/18
30 ml
42+x / 210+x = .3
42+x = 63+.3x
.7x = 21
x=30
Correct!
9/19
A
PIRATE
SAILOR
EARRING
PILLAGE
Second word took me quite some time for whatever reason
.2 (210) = 42 ml acid already there
.3 (210 + x) = 42 + x
x = 30 ml acid needed
Didn’t get the other one. Some words I got, though, were STRIPE, HERRING, and HELLPIG.
btw, I’m a bit bugged by the concentration problem. Conservation of volume isn’t a thing in general when mixing liquids. Mixing x ml of acid and y ml of water doesn’t necessarily give you x+y ml as a result, so 30ml might not be the answer.

Add an A
Sailor
Pirate
Pillage
Earring (could have been Angrier)
Correct!
Is that because the two liquids might interact and cause a chemical reaction? Or is there another reason that the combined volume would be different?
9/20/2021 - NUMBER MAZE
In this maze, start at the 4 in the top-left corner and move horizontally or vertically (but never diagonally) to reach the star in the bottom-right corner. At each move, travel the same number of squares as the number in the cell you are currently on. Since you are starting on a cell containing 4, your next move is either 4 squares to the right or 4 squares down. The next move will be based on your new cell’s number. Can you find the correct path?
Well, I’m ignoring reaction. But, yes, because of interaction between (non-reacting) molecules. Molecules interact with each other, and not just when you’re mixing compounds. You have interaction with just a single compound. Water is a good example because it is pretty polar - one side of each molecule tends to be positively charged (near the H atoms, which don’t hold on to their electrons very well and therefore end up somewhat positively charged) and the other side tends to be negatively charged (the O atom tends to grab the electrons, making the side away from the H’s more negatively charged) . So you can kind of think of the molecules as a bunch of little magnets with positive and negative sides. The charge differences affect the interaction between the molecules - kind of forcing them more apart. But these interactions change when you mix in another compound. So, when you mix water with acetone, for instance, you end up with less than the sum of the original volumes.
