Four answers in this small crossword are too long for their spaces and extend part the border by one letter at either the front or the back. The four protruding letters, taken clockwise from the top, spell a certain type of mixture. What is this bonus word?

Fit the pieces into the frame to form common, uncapitalized words reading across and down corssword-style. There’s no need to rotate pieces: They’ll fit as shown, with each piece used exactly once.

Add the same letter to each four-letter word and rearrange the letters to spell a five-letter word. Write the words across, one letter per square. The added letter must always fall in the shaded square.
