I was amused with my Chicagoan roommate’s use of dis, dat, and de udder.
If it’s pronounced ze, it needs to be spelled ze!!!
I have an eating disorder, I’m eating dis order, I’m eating dat order.
I would also be fine with “ze” which I have seen, but which seems to have even less traction than “xe” from what I can tell (and I am not an expert). But they both seem to be losing out to the singular they, which I hate.
I like xe because the x represents the unknown. Pronouncing x is not difficult. Think xylophone or xenophobia
and to be clear, the people flipping are referring to a PLURAL number of people when they chant
I honestly hated “they” as a singular pronoun at first, for reasons stated here. It was incorrect when I was learning grammar. Then it was pointed out to me that language is fluid, ever changing, and I was able to accept the change.
I still don’t understand, though, why we don’t say, “They is…,” when using “they” as singular. But I don’t make the rules.
I mean, there’s no reason why it should be is. The same way you don’t say “you is” for the singular you.
At least most of us don’t say it that way anyway.
No, “you” is second person singular. “They” is third person.
When diagramming “to be”
1st person singular - am
2nd person singular - are
3rd person singular - is
1st person plural - are
2nd person plural - are
3rd person plural - are
So if “they” is used as a singular pronoun, Ajatudies is right that it should be “they is”.
Only if you stick to the old grammar. But we’re reinventing it, so those rules are subject to change too.
Thread drift
No one knows the title subject.
One could say it’s pronounced zee
“Dey” and “dem”.
It won’t catch on until we embrace it.
On the subject of critical race theory:
Long, but interesting. And yes, it takes a while to get to critical race theory.
Everything the Republicans are about these days is based on a culture wars bullshit fight with the “woke left”. The ties made back to the Koch brothers were interesting. I knew CRT became a hot topic overnight but I wasn’t sure the original source. I feel like I should fact check that but the whole push around anti-CRT nonsense is just so absurd that I am not sure it really matters where it came from.
I’m going to guess “The 1619 Project.” That is when The Right lost its shit.
They needed a boggy man since they have zero ideas. CRT is just the latest whipping boy so to speak.
That was quite good. Thanks for the link.
Ok but wtf is with his shirt? Looks like he spilled a strawberry milkshake on it an hour before filming.
