The Chinese balloon incident concerns me. I’m not concerned that China will gather valuable intel, but rather that this is an escalation in tension between the 2 countries
I’m somewhat surprised the US hasn’t shot it down / forced it to land yet. I imagine that will happen eventually, with the technology seized and examined. I’m sure the Chinese would have done that had the situation been reversed

Could have just used Google Maps.
Unless they REALLY need to know what kind of car I drive (and they’ll be disappointed).

The article said that since the balloon was at 60,000 ft it would be messy and dangerous to shoot it down since it would create a sizable debris storm
But it’s just an innocuous civilian weather balloon that accidentally went of course to the other side of the world!
I remember that time my kite accidentally ended up flying over australia when i was just trying to enjoy myself on a california beach…

I thought the “1947 incident” near Roswell New Mexico was just a military ballon that crashed. This thing can’t be much different.
Why the Chinese gotta cause a fuss
And spy balloons, really? What is this, 1923?

When they replace all the birds with bird-shaped drones they won’t need balloons anymore. (That’s if they haven’t done it already).

Fu-Go (ふ号[兵器], fugō [heiki], lit. "Code 'Fu' [Weapon]") was an incendiary balloon weapon (風船爆弾, fūsen bakudan, lit. "balloon bomb") deployed by Japan against the United States during World War II. It consisted of a hydrogen-filled paper balloon 33 feet (10 m) in diameter, with a payload of four 11-pound (5.0 kg) incendiary devices and one 33-pound (15 kg) high-explosive anti-personnel bomb. The uncontrolled balloons were carried over the Pacific Ocean from Japan to North America by fast, high-...

Hitting a balloon at 60,000 feet? That’s not any harder than hitting a womp rats back home!

In addition, a bullet has a vertical range of about 10,000 feet. Nevetheless, I can imagine a few marksmen scouring the sky for something resembling a baloon.

I am sure the Chinese are gathering intelligence on the US in much more sophisticated ways than this balloon.

Hope you don’t decide to shoot it down when it drifts north of the US border.
