Canada <> US

I grew up watching Russ Jackson, Ron Lancaster, Kenny Ploen and Bernie Faloney. I would rather watch CFL than American college or UFL but it is nowhere near the NFL in terms of skill level and spectacle.

Skill level and spectacle are definitely higher in the NFL. No one does spectacle like the USA. However I am a bit put off by excessive displays of military might and patriotism which are common at NFL games.

I will concede that Canada has more colourful names for its professional football teams than the NFL has. Argonauts, Alouettes, Blue Bombers, Stampeders, Roughriders certainly top bland names like Lions, Jets, Giants, Rams, Texans, etc.

Shame we can’t get some Minor League Baseball names brought up to the major leagues.

You should check out Junior Hockey team names. My favorite is the Cataractes, literally the name of an eye disease.

I don’t think they had an eye disease in mind.

A cataract is another name for a waterfall.

I assume the team in question is from a french speaking region?

Have to use the /s

Long day.

I’m thinking it’s talking about rapids in a river.

Until recently we had the Newfoundland Growlers in the ECHL. Named after the sound an iceberg makes when dragging over ocean bottom.

I remember a comedian (but don’t remember who) commenting a while back on how, with only 8 CFL teams, you had duplicate Roughriders. I see that joke was addressed.

Yeah, that showed a certain lack of imagination!

Sea dogs of Labrador would make sense

Interesting to see Ontario’s conservative premier supporting Trudeau’s Liberals in standing up to Trump and threatening to cut off electricity if tariffs do come.

I posted this story earlier in the tariffs thread if you want to see those comments.

Doug Ford can talk to Trump in language he understands. I have no problem with Ford’s rhetoric. Folks need to start standing up to Trump rather than accommodating him. Harder for Trudeau to talk tough. Trump could counter that cutting off energy supplies is an act of war but I no longer care what Trump says.

Historically Canada has not bothered recruiting doctors from the US as there are many other countries where it is easier to do so. However Canada is now reaching out to US doctors who may be concerned about political interference in their practice and worried about things like going to jail for performing an abortion.

From 1970-1990 about 10% of Canadian trained MDs (between 200 and 300 per year) left for the US. The number is far less today with a total of about 6000 Canadian trained MDs in the US compared to less than 1000 US trained MDs in Canada. I will be interested to see how many US doctors want to spend the winter in Winnipeg. Maybe they can recruit a few from North Dakota,

I expect the numbers to be very small: maybe a few homesick Canadians who have been working in the US?

I agree Winnipeg is probably not the number one destination.
