The truck was sealed with a customs tag so should have gone through regardless of the cargo. US Customs just being stupid and obstructive.
FDR must be rolling over in his grave.

yeah this was just deliberate. there was no import, just passing through.Theres a lot of stuff goes through the border that is checked in country or elsewhere
It’s what you’d expect from China or Russia, not the US.
CANADA! CANADA! CANADA! ![]()

The article is interesting, looking at Québécois politics and the reasons for the erosion of popular support for independence.
No mention of the extent to which things south of the border might have promoted pro-Canada sentiment in QC, aside from PQ’s promise to wait until You-Know-Who is out of office to hold a referendum.
This is just bizarre, DeSantis is claiming property taxes can be drastically cut with the shortfall in funding made up by taxing snowbirds more.

I think it is reasonable to charge people who own vacation homes a higher rate than people who are permanent residents and contribute to the economy and sales tax year round. It is something that is often proposed around here, where many of the people are summertime only, often tearing down small houses and rebuilding giant ones that don’t fit in.
But you don’t start by massively cutting property taxes for the permanent residents.
The UK has been doing this with council tax for vacation homes that sit empty most of the year.
But they haven’t cut council tax for everybody else…which is bonkers.
It sounds in Florida like a mirage and blatant lie to say no property tax for homes valued under 650k with the shortfall to be made up by Canadians.
The article refers to Canadians but presumably Americans from northern US states with part time residency in Florida would be hit in the same way?
If not, then I see this as a ploy to encourage Canadians to sell their Florida properties and drive down property values so that Americans can buy more cheaply in Florida. He just doesn’t want foreigners in his state.
The flip side is that part time residents pay property taxes year round but only benefit from some of the services for the part of the year they are there. Seems unfair to charge higher property taxes just because someone lives there 6 months rather than 12.
I have no desire to live in Florida but if I did have a second home there I would feel very unwelcome and would probably sell my place as a result of this. The Canadians that I know that have a Florida place are very much a part of their Florida community but that sense of being welcome is easily shattered.
Like so much coming out of the US these days, it’s just simple minded thinking. The choices aren’t pay higher taxes or nothing. The choices are pay higher taxes or leave, and Canadians are already leaving in droves.
And when they leave, there goes all the money they spend on clothes and has and food and and and. I wouldn’t be surprised if the.mi EU Canadians spend down there at business far exceeds any of this tax stuff.
Frankly it’s not an economic thing they’re pushing, it’s hate mongering. Which I’m starting to hear is a thing that canadians are starting to experience in the US.
Yeah. The singling out of Canadians confirms that:
It’s kind of amusing. The GOP talks about taxes punishing success and that taxes like the billionaire tax will cause billionaires to flee state and so should be avoided. However that logic doesn’t seem to apply to the highly mobile snowbird population who could simply choose to overwinter elsewhere.
It’s hate mongering to play to and rally persuadable voters as we head into the midterms. The GOP needs something to get their voters, who might be inclined to simply not turn out or vote D due to dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, to turn out and support the party…and this is what DeSantos has got.
These guys really need to read the room. The world is not as benign as it once was. They remind me of the SNP in Scotland now with IndyRef (which would leave Scotland basically insolvent if done today)
Support for independence is at historic lows in Quebec, probably less than 30%, as historical grievances have been addressed and Quebec has a privileged status within Canada. The next referendum will be defeated so it is academic whether the PQ gets elected today.
The PQ will make it harder for the rest of Canada to deal with Quebec but Quebec has no good reason to leave Canada.
The Alberta separatist movement is the one that upsets me more. US conservatives are involved whereas they don’t care about Quebec.
