Canada <> US

Canadian Boycott of US goods is already costing the US about $1 Billion/month.

And Lutnick seems to be under the impression that tripling down on the punitive approach is going to magically work this time when they try to water down USMCA so that it favours the US more.

Ontario premier Ford just spent 29 million of public money for a plane, that’s not gonna go over well

Lutnick can’t stand that someone is standing up to him: like Trump in that way. Just wish other countries had pushed back harder against Trump on trade issues.

Canada like Iran knows Trump is all bluster, and likely to lose the ability to legislate in under a year, so you just have to wait it out.

That’s $3 per capita.

This guy is an absolute idiot, who in their right mind talks like he does in his professional capacity? The mask is really off here. The guy is a complete arrogant ass.

But its not spread out per capita.

It is hitting the US communities along the Canadian border in a rather big way. They relied on Canadian tourism.

As if the word of wars were not enough, now devout Catholic families are going to take it on the chin as well. Maybe $21 per household. Adds insult to injury, imo.

The bigger hit is the US tariffs on the $billions of goods imported from Canada. That hit is still being absorbed primarily by importers but ultimately by US consumers.

And it didn’t…..

Holy shit.

ETA nostalgia is not a strategy, chalk full of war of 1812 references.

Not an economic strategy. Prolly a pretty good rah-rah-rah strategy? (to the tune of USA! USA!) CA-NA-DA! CA-NA-DA!

It didn’t go well, he’s reselling the jet.

But he’s also making sort of a valid point. He mentions the hundreds of millions spent on jets by the federal govt for travel by federal ministers, and the jets bought by quebec for the very same reason - and not a peep out of the media. He buys one jet for the same reasons, and gets absolutely roasted.

So either its valid to have a jet for these folks, or it’s not.
Frankly IMO they shouldn’t be travelling so much that they need a jet anyway. They can rent one once in a while. Otherwise, the seat of govt is in toronto and if they have meetings the attendees can either zoom or fly coach to toronto.

I know the Prime Minister travels a bunch by private/government jet. I’m not sure that Cabinet Ministers travel by private/government jet most of the time. I think they’re mostly going commercial

Is it? Where? Buffalo? Our side of Niagra sucks. Detroit? Same thing. Near Montreal or Quebec City? There isn’t much in the US around there. I am sure the impacts in Orlando and Florida are probably the most significant.

I am not saying it isn’t true at all, its such a tiny number for the whole of the US, and a fairly small number until you can get it allocated down to a few million with direct impacts.

I suspect folks in Champlain, NY or St. Albans, VT and at the Jay Peak resort would disagree.

The pene-exclave town of Point Roberts, Washington is in severe trouble, with the boycott adding to the damage it experienced from the pandemic border closure.

CBC story on the continued reduction in cross-border travel, with some US businesses that had significant Canadian customer bases now accepting Canadian dollars at par to US dollars in an effort to lure some business back.

Also Burlington, VT, where all the signs are in English and French for the Quebecois that would frequently visit. I was there the weekend that Trader Joes first opened and the Canadians cleaned out the entire stock of 2-buck chuck.
