The content of social media is of course free speech.

I’m inclined to agree that the content recommendation is also a form of free speech by the company.

A first step is with children. We definitely restrict what can be said to children.

Related: I remember when fast food was marketed very heavily towards children. That has almost completely stopped as far as i can tell. Those companies got ahead of that problem. It might be ok to market really unhealthy food to adults; doing so to children creates very different political and legal risks.

I don’t think once you become a non-child, you’re suddenly immune to misinformation and content addiction. People of all ages are susceptible.

If kids don’t get at least some exposure to, and gain an understanding of, how addictive and manipulative social media and just regular media can be from an early age, they won’t know how to identify what’s right and wrong once the restraints are off.

That might work after age 14 or so. In a controlled fashion.

But before 14…I would say no. The vast majority of kids would not have the necessary knwoledge and experience to pin point social media manipulation attempts.

Best way to handle this is how Norway deals with it. They have classes on this starting to in secondary school, but good luck getting that up and running in the US.

The amount of stupid BS that they learned from Facebook and which my older relatives believe is nuts.

So many of them posting notices telling Facebook/Zuckerberg that they can’t use their photos. Dumb ass, that’s part of the terms of service you agreed to.

I guess it wouldn’t be a bad idea as a class project to simply just sit down and read the terms of service for a product just so they’d know what it actually says in there.

This is like the modern version of that purple chat monkey from the 90s, Bonzai Buddy or something like that. (Which iirc was basically malware.)

> What counts as social media? Is GoActuary addictive? Maybe it is. Should it be regulated? I dunno. For some people, maybe it is addictive. I’d say there might even be a smooth refreshing kernel of truth in that statement.

GoActuary is social media.

Is it addictive? Clearly not addictive enough as we now have like 5 users.
