Bridge: 2024 MSC discussion

A) 3D. Then if partner bids 3H or 3S, I bid 3NT, expressing doubt about my spade stopper.
B) 4H. Admittedly I am underbidding. But what bidding sequence shows 6-5 in the reds?
C) Double. The five-level belongs to the opponents. But with the HA, I should be able to manage a diamond ruff plus my HA and partner’s trick. My hand actually has two more tricks than I might,
D) 3NT. Seems obvious.
E) 2NT. It’s between this and 3H. Not 3D.
F) 3NT. I’d love to bid 4NT natural, but I don’t know what is expert standard.
G) 1NT. Not double.
H) HJ. Need less from partner than SJ.

A. 3D. Not good enough to insist on game
B. 4H. No safe alternative to investigate slam
C. Double. Good chance we’ll beat it even if partner does not realize this asks for an unusual lead. But it should ask for an unusual lead, since double is so unexpected
D. 3NT. What alternative am I missing? Will this be the first unanimous panel and unanimous solvers?
E. 3H, though 2N may be better. Both those are far better than 3D, which is 3rd best but a distant 3rd
F. 3N.
G. Double, though 1NT might well be better, and I won’t be happy when partner rebids 2 of a minor (would reluctantly rebid 2H, wishing I had started 1NT)
H. HJ. Need less in hearts to set it with hearts, though spades has the advantage that partner has our club entry if any, so partner has the entry if we can set up our suit with declarer stopping it only once.

I haven’t looked at BWS for this, but if that’s the case I think it should have been footnoted since they did footnote 4C and 4N.

Only 3 voters so far, but since all agree on three questions we have 3 current leaders. And almost 4 current leaders, because I would be very comfortable with 2NT on E. In fact, until I went to type in my answers I thought I had ended up at 2NT, but I had written down 3H so I stuck with 3H. (And I would be very comfortable with 1NT on G, but since VVV passed 1NT wouldn’t be leading even had I chosen it.)

A) 3N but I really thought 3D was right and talked myself out of it. Could be right if partner has massive clubs.
B) X
C) 5S
D) 3D
E) 3D (considered 2N)
F) 3N
G) X
H) D4 - takes less to establish diamond suit

A. 3NT, a bit pushy with a stiff club, but hopefully pd either has a running suit (and the heart ace) or enough in spades we have a double stopper.
B. 5 hearts. Tough one.
C. Double. Rare to double in this sequence, but so much defense in context.
D. 3 diamonds. I know it is wimpy, but I like plus scores at matchpoints.
E. 2NT.
F. 4NT. I hope this is natural?
G. Double. I might bid 1NT with these spades and four hearts, but with five, will double. Partner does not need a stopper with 12-14 balanced to bid 1NT in this sequence.
H. Diamond 4. Close with this and a heart. With partner not acting over 3C and us with so little, going to be tough to beat, so lead the suit requiring the least from pd.

A) 3D
B) 5N
C) Pass
D) 3NT
E) 4H

Now 4 leaders, with a previous leader (and also A) in 3-3 ties

April guesses:

A. 3D
B. Double
C. Double
D. 3N
E. 1S should be forcing . 3D implies much better diamonds
F. 6N
G. Double
H. Heart jack

5 with a leader, since Dbl is leading G (and may be almost unanimous, as I’ll be changing to Dbl)

In case you need a tie break on H, I’m switching to D4 since it’s IMPs and it does require considerably less from partner.

Our 750 tied for 9-20 on the monthly Honor Roll. 720 by NN and VVV would have tied for 32-43. It took 70 to make the Honor Roll.

Trivia note: because tied scores are listed alphabetically, ours (as Steve White) was listed 20th. 21st, the first 740 listed was Louis Glasthal from another Phila suburb, and I played against him IRL on Tuesday in a club game. I didn’t recognize him by appearance, but did recognize the name.

Some toughies there.

Have missed this thread altogether until now. It should show up now that I’ve posted in here.

A Pass. We are in a force. I will pull a double to 4H, but will cue 5C if partner bids 4 of either major, and will also bid 5C (showing 3 keycards) if partner bids 4N.
B 3D? 3N and 5 of either minor are in play. 3N seems too one-dimensional. 3D leaves more room than 3H and keeps all three strains in play. 3H is a close second choice. 3N is a fairly close 3rd choice.
C 3H. I’d like to hear about spades if partner has three of them or honor-x. Otherwise, 3N seems like the right place. 3S puts too much emphasis on spades.
D 1S. I don’t think we have a red game, but I’m afraid the opponents do, and I want a spade lead.
E 2S. I can bid notrump later if it seems advisable.
F 4D. 4C and 4D seem like the only options. Since it’s matchpoints, I’ll aim for the major suit.
G 5D. We might make it. We might be down 300 against 1430. When they have the spades, make them guess. If you reversed my majors, I might well bid 2S or 2N.
H H8? This way I can win the HA when partner can make a meaningful discard. Danger is that declarer gets something away on D AK. Close second choice is SA.

A) 4H. Pass is tempting, and probably stronger than 4H, but I have no interest in defending, and basically a minimum for my cuebid.
B) 3D. Forcing, shows good hand. Can’t wait to hear partner’s rebid.
C) 2S. 2NT also possible, but I should show my sixth spade first.
D) Pass. If majors were reversed, I’d bid 1H, but I don’t like opening a 4-card spade suit.
E) 2S. Five spades and 11 hcp, and I’m protected by being a passed hand.
F) 4C. 5C a close second choice.
G) 5D. Gives the opponents the final guess. If I bid only 4D, the opps will bid 4S and I’ll have to guess. If I instead bid 2H, that makes it really easy to intervene in spades.
H) Club 3. Any suit could be right.

A) 4H
B) 3H
C) 3S, 2S not forcing partner showing about 10 we have 15
D) P
E) 2S
F) 5C
G) 5D
H) c3

I thought these were more straightforward than usual

A. P, persuaded by VVV. But 4H with an asterisk in the table. I’ll score myself based on 4H, which was my original thought.
B. 3D. Partner could still bid 3H to ask for a stopper.
C. 2S. Should show 6
D. 1S. It is a strong 4-card major, certainly the lead I want. Happy to pass 1NT if partner bids that
E. 2S. OK as a passed hand
F. 4D. Not wanting to bid only 4C, not wanting to bypass 4H (or bid 4H)
G. 2H, though also considered 5D
H. C3
