Driving kid back to college
Me “You can change off my music to whatever you want”
Kid “That’s OK, I am widening my tastes a little. My friends are surprised I don’t like just one kind of music. I said there’s a new term out there that applies to me. I’m polyjamorous”
Well, she didn’t coin it, but I loved the wordplay, and the openness to variety of music.

the ethical question is, are the other types the kid listens to aware and consenting this?

Younger daughter, almost-22 yo, has now been accepted into two graduate schools for music-voice, and, to top it off, she just received an invitation to audition at the Sibelius Academy.

5 is old enough to get some idea if a kid is gifted, and yeah, weird answers are signs of that. It’s worth finding out. Asking more questions, or just doing standardized tests or whatever.

No idea what you actually do when you know a kid is gifted. I jumped my kid head a year, but according to the goactuary thread, there are some mixed opinions on the matter.

Certainly wouldn’t assume “engineer” regardless, lol. That part might just be the first part he can express.

I showed my 6th grader a couple weeks ago how to connect the keyboard to garageband. She now has a 46 bar piece with 5 tracks, 3 chord harmony, an intro, and an ending.

I have a kid like this. Sadly, she hates math. 😭

She’s currently majoring in sociology. A lot more caring and less mercenary than her mother.

Same daughter had a solo at this weekend’s spring choir concert (How Can I Keep From Singing, Arranged by Ronald Staheli), then she also conducted a piece that she chose…which involved teaching the choir how to pronounce those words since it was in Estonian. Before the conducting part, the choir’s (main) conductor introduced her with some very kind comments.

Have been spending an hour or two each day on the weekend last week and this week on spring cleaning. My 3 kids (still here) have all been very helpful, not bitching and whining at all. Asking, “What do you want me to do next?” Taking initiative and looking for something else to do. Very positive experience.

The little one has seen me skating a few times now and she wants to learn how.

We found a teacher for her so that she can start learning a bit (she is 4). Once she has her skating legs I will teach her a bit of hockey for fun.

Learning with new teacher. She is naturally quite athletic so she is doing pretty well. 🙂

Pic from Lapland. She was fascinated by the hockey gear and wanted us to bring the hockey stick home lol

There weren’t many skating rinks in the UK when we lived there so our skating languished. It was about a 45 minute drive to the closest one whereas I like them within walking distance.

Yes, the rinks here are few and far between.

Miss that about living in Canada. You could just walk like 5mins to the outdoor rink and skate/play hockey all evening long if you wanted to.

22yo has her Senior voice recital next Monday, April 29th at 6:30 pm (CDT, of course) at a college near (north) St. Paul, MN.

If you enjoy the singing of a soubrette coloratura soprano and are looking for some free entertainment that night, let me know, and I’ll send you the details.

I’ll be the one beaming with pride — and not just because the lights are shining off my head.

Edit: I chatgpt so that you don’t have to: “Soubrette” typically indicates a light, bright voice suited for playful or coquettish roles, often in operas or musicals. “Coloratura” refers to a soprano capable of agile, ornamental singing, excelling in fast, florid passages. So, a “soubrette coloratura soprano” suggests a soprano with a light, agile voice, perfect for roles that require both charm and technical prowess.

I remember announcing the births of my kids on the AO 😂

Second born, who is 24 now 🫠, is graduating from uni in London 🥳 She was determined to do this program bc she wants to stay in the UK. She had challenges along the way that she had to navigate on her own and she did it.

I’m so fucking proud of her!! 🥳🥳🥳

I’ll fly to London in June and spend a week with her. ❤

Brings back memories. My middle daughter got her Masters at LSE when she was 24 and stayed in London. I keep hoping she and her partner and their toddler will return to Canada but am getting resigned to the fact I will not have the close relationship to my youngest granddaughter that I have with my Vancouver ones. It is wonderful that these overseas opportunities exist but it is also nice to have family nearby.
