Anybody try it? Apparently it helps reduce lactic burn out, which would be useful for my sport work. I’m worried though about lack of long term studies / possible side effects.
Supposed to be good for endurance athletes and cross fit training. I took it a little doing basic weight training and didn’t feel like it added any value.
I said this in your creatine thread but I’ll say it again. I used to take supplements but after I got a dietician the gains I got from eating right outweighed any kind of boost I got from taking creatine, so I stopped. Maybe I could get even more swole if I retook the creatine, but I’m happy enough with my progress that I don’t take it anymore.
For weightlifting, it mostly came down to eating a lot more. So unless you already have a dietician and have your diet so dialed in that you can’t improve it, getting your diet fixed will beat any kind of supplements.
I’m not trying to build muscle, I’m trying to optimize sport performance, at a sport where lactic acid burn out is usually what makes you have to stop for the day.
I simply need to know what sport we are talking about here. TF is sport work.
Agree with cs’s comments - nutrition/diet will be most effective at optimizing performance. If you feel your nutrition is solid, then you can absolutely “play in the margins” with supplements like Beta-Alanine.
Personally, I’ve used Beta-Alanine as I felt my nutrition was good enough that I wanted to start to experiment to see what worked vs what didn’t. It’s hard for me to say whether or not it noticeably improved my performance as the placebo effect is very real. I didn’t track my times/weights/etc prior to taking it vs during. What I can say is that I definitely felt it while taking it - I got the tingly/itchy feeling that you’ll read about. Literature says that its harmless and goes away but worth mentioning.
I took it as part of a pre-workout cocktail of supplements so what I’m about to say could 100% be a side effect of one of those BUT… I didn’t particularly enjoy how I felt while doing strenuous short/intense (< 10 min) style workouts. TMI but I can recall on a few occasions almost having a Hyrox lady incident. Again, could have nothing to do with BA.
FWIW I haven’t taken it in about a year - the cost (of the pre-workout), no noticeable improvements, and near catastrophic incidents outweighed any potential benefits I was (or wasn’t) seeing in the gym.
