Not surprised that the UK imports about 40% of its food. Comparable % for US and Canada is 20% and 30% respectively but Canada is taking steps to reduce its dependence on imported food.
Are these numbers net? I’m thinking that a large fraction of our produce is imported, particularly in winter, but I’m thinking we make up for it with our grain exports.
These numbers are gross. We import a high percentage of our fresh fruit and vegetables but a low percentage of processed foods, dairy products and meat.
Canada is a large net exporter of food.

British businesses can now access the full benefits of the UK’s membership of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
The UK signed the CPTPP in 2023, and it entered into force in 2024 with the first countries that had ratified.
Canada is the final country to have ratified our accession, so from today (1 September) businesses have access to all 11 CPTPP member countries, with economies worth almost £10 trillion in 2025.
UK businesses operating in Canada will benefit from easier travel arrangements under CPTPP, with eligible business visitors now able to stay for up to six months, compared with the previous limit of 90 days in any six-month period.

What the article does not mention is that the U.S. originally helped negotiate the prior Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP): Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. signature in 2017 before it took effect.
