I found this interesting: especially the mathematical aspects.
Gaia?
Multiple CMEs inbound. That caused the SWPC to publish the following this morning:
(“Tonight” = night of 30 November / 1 December)
It’s worth remembering, however, that solar weather predictions are considerably less reliable than regular weather forecasts.
The penultimate scientist is reported to have said, “Yeah, well, I loosened it for you. :-b ”
I had to look up “winkle”. Seems like a perfectly cromulent verb.
Have experienced several partial solar eclipses over the decades but nothing compares to a total eclipse if the weather is clear. I would have gone back to Eastern Canada and tie in a family visit to see the Great North American Eclipse but the timing doesn’t work.
I can almost guarantee that it will be cloudy within a few hours’ drive of St. Louis.
I booked a trip there for the eclipse as soon as hotel reservation systems opened.
(Headed near there, rather than a less-likely-to-be-cloudy locale for family reasons.)
That Smarter Every Day guy is really great
Had an awesome experience in rural TN for the 2017 eclipse. Will be in KY for an event the weekend prior, so extending a day and gambling for good weather in IN. Not likely per meteorologists, but was already nearby. Wishing everyone luck for their viewing.
We’re in GA and have friends in both TX and OH. Will wait until a few days before event and go where the weather/cloud cover is best.
We were at our place in NC for the last one - totality is a weird thing to experience for sure. Hope it works out again this year for us.
Making plans to visit a friend in San Antonio, though it might get cancelled.
Some other friends are already going to be camping nearby. Guessing Kerrville, as it is the closest town on The 10 where the eclipse will cross. Has several RV spots, but I noticed a few months ago that they were all booked up.
Gonna drive a bit out of town to get into a good viewing area!!!

Our eclipse BnB canceled. Found a new one that was reasonably priced, without any reviews. Will get back to you if we are not murdered in our sleep.
In other astronomy news, the latest starship got a little farther.
It made it to space, handled stage separation, and achieved orbital velocity, but was still apparently tumbling a bit, out of control for some reason. So closer and closer but no cigar yet.
That risk was definitely a concern and why I went with an overpriced hotel room with a kitchen. Fingers crossed for your new booking!
Saw my Eclipse camping friends the other day. Turns out they will be closer to Fort Worth than San Antonio, in the middle of nowhere, no hook-ups or anything. So, won’t see them that day.
In other news, Southwest is completely booked around the eclipse date for LAX to San Antonio, or selling flights at $400 each way, which for me means no fucking way.
Will make driving there a week-of decision. Might depend on whether I can make my car comfortable (new audio, fix the driver window), and this would include an overnight at a questionable truck stop. Are cars allowed to rest there? Asking for me. OR, buying a new car in the next three weeks and immediately putting 2800 miles on it.
Choices, choices…
Renting a car option?
That’s expensive, too.
Working from “not going” at the moment. The cheapest option. From there, expenses need to be compensated with experiences.
Add to the mix: one of my friends (known for 45 years) who lives in San Antonio has Stage Four pancreatic cancer. Cannot put off visiting too long.
Might be possible to share expenses with someone going the same way. Friend or family or creeper in craigslist. Spending 40 hours alone with someobe is bound to make you very familiar and comfortable together.
