Keep in mind that for much of Connecticut, exits are spaced about every mile. When the state renumbers I-95’s exits in a couple of years, most exits will either keep their number or shift them by 1. On I-91, the exit for Bradley Airport will go from Exit 40 to Exit 48.
While I prefer that exit numbering be distance-based, the renumbering project in CT is causing a bunch of money to be spent without much meaningful change.
The catch with that search is that you may still need to interact with the app to sort through the information being provided. “There’s a McDonalds 2 miles away.” “But Mickey D’s doesn’t really count as food!”
Also, in Google Maps, won’t “restaurants near me” return restaurants near you, when in fact you might be interested in “restaurants that won’t add too much to my drive”?
The tactic I used was to have a search for “W or X or Y or Z”, listing some chains I would consider to be acceptable stops for “road food”, and once upon a time Google Maps was smart enough to find me those places and indicate distance and added travel time, so that I could pick one with minimal interaction (aside from needing to paste in the search).
Annoyingly, you needed to be prepared to do the text-pasting, and the search function has become dumber and prone to returning sponsored results. (No Google, if I wanted to eat at Wendy’s, I would have specified that in my search!)
Maps on the iphone has a feature that I only discovered a couple of years ago, that will search on the section of map that you have open at the time. If you zoom onto a certain town you hope to stop at in an hour or two, it will give you the option to “search for restaurants near area on your map”.
Dead batteries? I carry a battery booster in my car. Along with a jack, and a cordless impact wrench. I can change a flat or boost a battery in 30 seconds.
Locking self out of car? There’s an app for that.
Maps? You people use maps? Really? in 2026?
I get CAA on vehicles that I don’t trust to go long distances, generally towards end of life. I had CAA for a couple of years on my old vehicle that was 10 years old and had 350K on it. But my new vehicle? Nah.
I don’t think it’s an Apple/Android thing (it’s been available on iphones since 2018). It’s more a case of a smartphone user not noticing a feature until years after it’s become available. For instance, just the other day I was using swipe typing on my phone (it’s been available on iphone since 2019 and on Android several years before that) and several other people in the room had never noticed it before.
Edit: Actually it appears it’s only become an option since 2025 on iphones. You’re right - that’s a crazy long delay compared to 2014.
while the service guy is faster, i can change the tire no problem in general. in the shoulder of the very busy interstate, i pay the fee for someone else to be the tragic victim (or set the scene for it to be avoided w the flashing lights and large truck angled to protect us).
Plus the wait time.
I got a flat on the way home from a job interview some 40 years ago. So, yes, in my suit, in summer, on a busy SoCal freeway, I changed the effing tire. I was so much younger then, I’m older than that now.
I’d probably still change the tire myself.
Case in point, I was driving down a very busy highway (401) late last night. maps told me to take some podunk offramp in the middle of nowhere for some weird reason. I figured it was just a bug.
And right past the exit, Four lanes down to one and an extra 25 minutes of travel time. Sitting on the highway watching the headlights on the next road over zoom right along lol.
Was watching espn’s broadcast of the wsop final table.

There’s a difference between blindly following the maps app vs. assessing the overall traffic situation. Plenty of room for improvement in traffic apps.
For all the betting that ESPN touts (hah!) on its website, I had no idea that this was happening last night. Maybe I should have looked harder, but I shouldn’t have to.
Annoyed thoughts. Trying to reduce my cholesterol, so cutting out butter. I fried an egg in olive oil this morning. It was absolutely nasty, I threw it out and a yogurt instead. What a way to start the day.
