Annoyed Thoughts

I went to the Italian bakery this aft to get some buns: holy fluff, the place is almost picked clean!! Bun racks empty, bread racks empty, dessert racks almost empty!!! No way in heck I’m gonna go tomorrow!!!

I’m trying to make some gluten free crescent rolls for Christmas (used to always bring Pillsbury canned rolls). First batch was a no. Current ones are made with a GF flour blend that’s not one of the recommended options. Both a weight (250g) and volume measure (2 cups) are given in the recipe, but 2 cups is nearly 300g for the flour I’m using. Recipe also calls for GF flour with xantham gum, but mentions adding xantham gum in the instructions, which isn’t on the ingredients list. I used 2 cups of flour, but the dough seems pretty dry, whereas usually it’s more sticky. I’m not holding out hope for these.

My wife experienced a lot of frustration when she first started making g-f stuff for the celiacs in our family. She found the best recipes in the book below.

One tip: if you’re buying Bob’s Red Mill g-f baking flour, buy the blue bag. As you know, the choice of flour makes a huge difference in the taste and texture.

I have that cookbook. Unfortunately, cooking isn’t my strong suit, and it seems to assume the user has more skills than I do.

The current batch of rolls aren’t even rising. I probably shouldn’t even bother baking them.

My grandparents used to play that every Christmas, I’m somewhat partial to it.

Eh, cooking is fine; anyone can follow a recipe.

Baking bread is a whole other matter. A couple days ago I baked a couple loaves of bread. They were OK, but way too dense. Something screwed up, and it’s not just the mix of ingredients. There’s a magical ingredient missing or something, I dunno what. I do know that breadmaker, if he were here, would have the answer.

Puh-leeeeeeeeease!!! I’ve had doughs that baked into pucks, overflowed from a tablespoon of yeast instead of a teaspoon, burned, failed to poof up, etc. :man_shrugging:

@under12parsecs : Almond flour works very well for gluten-free cookies!! :yum:

Interesting how a family we know is financially struggling to the point that they borrow money from us and others (in the past year), but had their grandparents buy them a house in one city (a while ago), then when they needed to move for a job (around now), is having their grandparents buy them a house in the next city - and renovate it.

You’d think that if you almost never had to pay rent it’d be easier, but I guess not.

Emergency plumbing tonite. Figured I’d head to the hardware store and pick up a couple of sharkbites and since I’m too lazy to go to the tool shed through the snow, I’ll pick up a propane torch while I’m at it.

$114 Freakin dollars. No thanks. Turns out I’m not too much of a princess to trudge through the snow in the dark and get my torch.

I’m confused. Isn’t the point of a sharkbite that you don’t need a torch at all?

Well mannered bikers dominated today’s behavioral study out at the trail, maybe around 10-3.

But of course, within the 3 were a pair of e-bikes, charging up the hill at one end, then coming back down at a stupid rate of speed for a shared trail, going around some blind corners. The first asshole flies by “my brakes aren’t working!” FFS.

For how many fittings? I’m assuming we are talking normal pipes, 1/2” (13mm) or 3/4” (20mm)? I can get those for like $12 at Ace, $10 if I want to drive to Home Depot.

No nut allergies in the household, but my brother is allergic to almonds. I ended up getting packages of mix. It’s the same brand as the rolls I thought were meh, but they’re gluten free and can be made dairy free.

I tried to keep an open mind, but our backyard is going to be a fishbowl. Construction workers aren’t allowed to start until 7am, but I awoke to the framers at 6:50am. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

That was for one propane torch. I got the fittings for $50 but I had to have those. I’m not.paying 114 for a propane torch when I have one or two in the shed. I was expecting $30.

Went to the Dr. yesterday, the office was so over scented I felt sick

Ah, I mis-read that. $114 is highway robbery for a propane torch. I’d also expect $30 or $40.

you wouldn’t begrudge their way of drumming up business would you

Just shoveled a buncha ******in’ snow!!!

ETA: Now we’re getting a crap ton of freezing rain!!!
