All Things Coffee

Kirkland espresso seems pretty efficient costwise. 2.5lbs should be about 60 double shots of espresso @ 18 grams each. For $12 a bag, that’s only $0.20 a cup. And a lot less landfill waste.

You may see if there is a local option at Costco. My store carries some beans from KC… they don’t list the roast date but I would wager they are much fresher and still pretty inexpensive.

Yup, they carry a local option. This was one of the lighter roasts that I did not like in the espresso machine, but you helpfully made a point about brewing them at a higher temp, so that may have been my issue. It was good in the Technivorm.

I roasted some of the green coffee beans i have on hand. The beans are a few years old, so i can’t really expect greatness, but thought I’d give them a shot at making a few roasts for the espresso machine. These are Ethiopian yirgacheffe beans, mentioned earlier, usually have a light roast, berry flavors, a bit delicate.

I made two batches in my air popper. Roasted them to second crack. Darker than they deserve, but i was curious how they would turn out in the espresso machine.

Darker roasts can be brewed a day or so after roasting. Lighter roasts should test longer, a couple weeks. Or so the internet tells me. I tried a cup this morning. It was ok. Tasted like coffee, nothing offensive, no fruity notes.

I’ll see how it goes the next week. I’m not thinking it will get better over the next few days, but it’s all new data.

Ill try and roast some more and stop after first crack. Maybe try a range of every 15 seconds from then to second crack. I’ve got 3-4 pounds of this stuff to play with.

Only problem with the roasting is it smells terrible and i need to be careful to not burn anything down. Fortunately the smell means I’m doing this outside on the patio, that limits the risk of the second issue. The hood of the popper melted a bit yesterday. Oops…

Finally popped on a bag. It’s a little dark for my taste but overall it makes a decent espresso. It was just $19 for 2.5lb, compared to the local stuff at $11-$12 for a 12oz bag. The local stuff is fantastic and I can buy it the same week it’s roasted, but we’ve been really plowing through a lot of beans lately, I can live with these beans!

I went a little overboard back in the fall and bought three different single origin coffees that Costco had - Rwanda, Sumatra, and Costa Rica. They came in 2x3# bundles (they all seem to be from the same supplier in brown/red foil bags), so this was 18# of coffee. I enjoyed having one of each every morning (Breville Barista Pro Espresso Machine). I am down to about 1 week left.

Sadly, this is one of those items that Costco does not carry regularly. The Rwanda was interesting, a very earthy almost dank flavor. The Sumatra and Costa Rica were both good, but not as distinct as others I have tried. I might order the Organic Sumatra - I had that one last summer and it had a nice tobacco tone to it. Interestingly, it is lower rated than the one I had more recently.

As I was running low, ordered the Organic Jiguani and Decaf from Ruta Maya from Costco. Their decaf is my go-to for the espresso machine, really nice flavor for a decaf. I need to tinker with the Jiguani a bit more in the machine, it appears to be a mix of dark and espresso roasts. The interesting thing is that it appears these both shipped directly from roaster…I ordered them 1/23, they shipped 1/24 and arrived on 1/27. The roast date was 1/24. Very fresh and an amazing aroma.

My nephew works at Cometeer . So I’ve been buying that. For a coffee that’s as easy as instant, it’s really good. And their decaf is among the best I’ve had. (They sell a lot of coffees, and some are better than others, of course. ) If i drank coffee every day, it would be more expensive than I’d be willing to get. But i drink coffee from time to time, and this stuff keeps really well, unlike beans.

If you are interested in trying it, poke me and I’ll get you a free sample, because like most Internet subscription services, i get stuff if i order stuff for you.

Uh… apparently if you just click on the link and provide ZERO information you’ll get an email in your inbox inviting you to try it for free. :grimacing:

How did they get my email … just from me clicking on the link? Really? That’s kind of creepy.

I got that too, and ads on Facebook. The ads were expected though.

The ads are a main reason I open random links in private session, good to know about auto-emails going forward, a new step down for the internet

They use “Shop” for payments. Probably, if you have a shop account for anything else, it knows you.

Sorry about that. I didn’t mean to spam y’all.
