If there are going to be stations that have only Spanish music, who won’t play English music, then why should the English stations include Spanish music? Would you say the Spanish stations are bigoted?
Nowadays it doesn’t really matter anymore - does anyone listen to the radio at all? I have Spotify and I can choose the playlists I want.
I broadly prefer music in a language I know. Though for random pop hiphop it probably doesn’t matter much.
I was thinking at first I wanted subtitles, but they’d probably just be disappointing and distract from the spectacle.
Mostly this seems like a stupid conversation to have at all given how fucked America is.
Your statement seems to be suggesting you don’t want anyone to be encouraged to listen to Spanish music in general.
If the song is popular to a broad audience, I don’t see why it should be a problem to play it, if the song is within the radio station’s format. Playing the Macarena didn’t cause society to collapse. I suspect the number of people advocating a minimum of x% Spanish music on English stations is between slim and none. Bad Bunny seems to be popular at the moment given his Grammy wins, so his music gets played. A few years from now when his popularity trails off, it’ll get played less often.
I’m just saying that I didn’t like it. Radio stations can do whatever they want. Back then, if a Spanish song came on, I changed the station. I’d do the same today. So I didn’t watch the Halftime Show last night. I wasn’t telling others not to watch it. I wasn’t attacking Bad Bunny. I most definitely wasn’t protesting it at all.
These two things seem to be somewhat at odds. I am a little confused about who the people are who are insisting? Are those people the program directors at radio stations? Because if so, the second statement seems in conflict with that. Is it the average listener? How is someone having an opinion about what they want to hear any different from you having an opinion about what you want to hear? It seems a little different than the idea of “I’ll change the channel if I don’t like what I hear.”
The BB halftime was entertaining, which I guess is the purpose. I typically want a complete live vocal performance, but this show was very unique and elaborate and I knew going in that it wasn’t going to be a true live vocal performance.
On a related note, apparently Kid Rock did a crappy lip sync attempt on a counter-halftime show.
I don’t see why they’re at odds. I recognize that people can do what they want, even if it bothers me.
This conversation is only happening because America is currently f**ked up.
Meh.. most of the songs sung in superbowl halftime shows are in English but pretty terrible to me. Alas, they’re popular to many viewers. I can see why BB is popular. The NFL choosing a halftime show based on merit is a nice change of pace from how communist the NFL is normally.
I’m guessing you’ve never made an effort to get into classical vocal music. Whether it be Italian/French/German opera, German lieder, French art songs, oratorio, polyphonic, Gregorian Chant and other religious settings in Latin - it’s amazing. And 99% of it is not in English.
And complaining about people informing others about Spanish music with others in your complaint about it being mainstreamed.
Bad Bunny was the #1 streamed artist in the world in 2025 on Spotify. It isn’t about mainstreaming him, he is already mainstream.
Side note: I don’t remember a big controversy when Shakira, who is not American, performed partially in Spanish at the Super Bowl.
Don’t we consider the winner of the super bowl to be a ‘world’ champion? Something something…cake and eat it too.
Most of them are not live vocal. Too many “shit can happen” opportunities.
Look at you, trying to reason…
If it does bother you, there are plenty of English Radio stations that never play Spanish music of any kind in my experience. If enough people boycott stations that played some mixed English/Spanish they probably won’t do well financially.
I listen to mostly English that being the language I’m fluent in, but I found quite a few songs that are non-English language that I actually quite like if the music is good even if I don’t understand most of the words. Heck there are some English song I like where I can’t understand what the singer is saying half the time.
As for the Bad Bunny halftime show I was pleasantly surprised. I was not expecting much and actually enjoyed it more than quite a few other half time shows I’ve seen over the years.
I just watched the halftime show (we watched the Matrix last night instead of the Super Bowl), and really enjoyed it.
Some Americans do. It is a bit pretentious though for any team to call itself a “world” champion when the sport is only played in one country. My beloved Seattle Seahawks are the NFL champions not the “world champions.” The Saskatchewan Roughriders are the CFL champions: they would never call themselves “world champions” despite Canada being the only country where Canadian-style football is played.
There are several Spanish speaking artists that I really enjoy. As an example - Julio Iglesias has one of the most pleasant voices I’ve ever heard.
And, sure, I speak Spanish well enough? And I’ve listened to many of the songs enough that I know the lyrics.
One time I heard an album from an Italian artist (I don’t remember her name, unfortunately). I couldn’t understand any of the words, but I could listen to her sing all day long. It was absolutely beautiful.
Does Feliz Navidad by Feliciano have enough English content to make it tolerable?
