A Reminder of where America is heading

Well, in the same vein it looks like Trump & Co are trying to sneak in something via the backdoor.

They are trying to effectively stop federal judges from being able to execute contempt proceedings.

So is posting about Jewish space lasers anti-semitism? Or are those the kind of posts that get you into American leadership?

You can be antisemitic as long as you are also pro-Israel.

The only thing this is going to accomplish is that international students will avoid the US while Trump is in power. This will definitely damage international recruitment.

I remember my student visa interview, and if they had started to get stupidly intrusive (beyond the detailed forms you have to fill out and send to them for checking) I would have simply walked out and decided to study in a different country.

Nobody is looking to “study” in a police state.

Forget that. There are many other countries who are open-minded and respect your rights. Specially when you are plunking down $80k+/year (or more) for the tuition and accomodation.

With Trump around, there is simply too much risk now that he might turn around and cancel your student visa for crazy reasons during your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year and you end up losing many hundreds of thousands of $$$.

I wonder if you can still get a student visa if you’ve said anything negative about dear leader.

I’d be hesitant about pursuing a graduate degree in a country where I could be forced out of my program and possibly placed in indefinite detention at a moment’s notice for getting a traffic citation or a summons for a misdemeanor. Add on the additional risk where your university could lose its ability to host international students on the whim of the president, it’s just not worth the risk.

I would not be able to get a student visa under the current administration.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday ordered more scrutiny of the social-media profiles of any foreigners seeking to visit Harvard University, telling US consular officers that applicants’ lack of an online presence might be enough evidence to deny a visa.

I hate it when the Republicans say they are “cutting red tape to unleash industry” when what they are doing is gutting environmental protections. So much joint progress has been made by Canada and the US since the 1960s in regard to clean air and water that is now threatened by the Trump Administration.

Yup. It’s really easy to take something for granted when you never see what it could be like without the regulation. After a few days in a big city in China or India you’ll notice the sky is never blue and that haze in the air isn’t humidity, it’s the pollution that’s drifted in from the industry nearby.

Sure, you can see some ground level ozone around big cities here as well, especially in the summer, but it’s nothing by comparison.

I find it remarkable how conservative men in the O&G industry have made it manly to enjoy heavily polluted air and water. I don’t get the logic at all

Seems you stumbled upon the answer.

Conservative conservationalists did previously have a big impact, even if many wanted robust ecosystems simply to support hunting and fishing.

I find it incredibly infuriating that people who claim “don’t tread on me” as a political motto don’t see the connection to “don’t dump on me”.

Those people assume the dumping just happens to other people they don’t care about.

I remember when politicians claimed the terrorists and the communists hated the U.S. for its freedoms.

Now Trump and the GOP are going to start a spying operation on Americans that will dwarf what the stasi did in East Germany…

The comment by the CEO of Palantir caught my eye. Who is an “enemy”?

We are dedicating our company to the service of the West and the United States of America, and we’re super-proud of the role we play, especially in places we can’t talk about.’ ‘Palantir is here to disrupt,’ he continued. ‘And, when it’s necessary, to scare our enemies and, on occasion, kill them.’ (Palantir did not respond to a request for comment.)
