I recall when my college room mate returned from NYC after a job interview. He said money doesn’t mean anything in NYC. When breakfast at the hotel is $85, it doesn’t even phase folks with money. For those without money, it doesn’t matter what they charge. The prices are crazy, and it doesn’t matter.
No supermarket, no restaurant food. I’ve lived in Detroit, Chicago, Des Moines, Lincoln (NE), and two small towns. I’ve always had a car.
$85 for breakfast must have been pretty fancy, and/or multiple people, even in NYC.
All the same, can commute…
Haven’t been back to NYC in a while but based on some comments from co-workers:
$30 for a a glass of average sauvignon blanc at a higher end restaurant in NYC
Oh, and you have to “tip” $10 more to boot.
Its actually worse than London prices (this did surprise me a bit)
London is certainly cheaper now than NYC. London also has a better “feel” than NYC. Maybe because I have spent so much time in London over the past 50 years, I feel safer there than in NYC.
The have nots appear worse off in the states compared to other developed countries is the thing.
I did not find London to be expensive at least for your standard pub fare or drinks. Seemed pretty much the same as anywhere in suburban US, and cheaper than the higher COL areas. Strong dollar helped (about 1.28 per GBP).
This is part of the reason why programs like USAID were extremely cost effective for the US. Soft power is cheaper than military power.
Yep.
Interesting world leading countries historically got to the top through military power. China has been growing without its military in the lead. It seems China doesn’t want to be the world’s police but rather the world’s Walmart.
Yep. They are just weaponising anti-semitism for their own ends.
The Zionists backing Trump are all for it (payback for their donations), but its society that loses out in the end as freedom of speech and due process are severely damaged.
Just to update the legal situation. Here is the list of large firms with principles and a backbone:
Arnold & Porter
Covington
Crowell & Moring
Davis Wright Tremaine
Fenwick & West
Foley Hoag
Freshfields
Hausfeld
Jenner & Block
Manatt Phelps
Munger, Tolles
Perkins Coie
Wilmer Cutler
The rest seem to have capitulated to Trump and his blackmail.
More need to stand up to this shakedown.
[Trump has] inched perilously close to defying court orders outright.
Holy sanewashing
There goes Princeton’s Federal grants.
The name of the executive order, “US Executive Order Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government” is a mouthful and Orwellian. Canadian researchers comply to continue their partnership.
“Some examples of these changes are the replacement of the word ‘gender’ with the word ‘sex,’ the removal of the terms ‘intersex’ and ‘gender if different than birth,’ and other similar changes.”
Even if one hates trans people, how can ignoring biology and the existence of intersex people be a good thing in a health study?
Conservatives aggressively ignore intersex people, because it makes believing in a god-mandated static binary of gender uncomfortable.
There are men with penises and women with vaginas and super super rarely there’s an edge case that we need to fix because someone broken didn’t fully develop as the sex that we decided God made them.
And Canadian conservatives are similar to American conservatives in this regard. I shudder to think what will happen if our Conservative Party wins this election as its leader talks like Trump in this regard.
Canada tends to adopt the worst, rather than the best, of American ideas. Conservatives here are emboldened by much of what is happening in the US.
If your primary mission is to reinforce your definition of how the world works and not improving health or understanding ignoring biology is par for the course.
