A brain worm's vision for public health

Dunkin and 'bucks should simply reply, “Show me the science that says it is bad. Check your FDA reports. No, the internet and anti-social media do not count as evidence.”

Cuz “show me that it’s safe” is not how this country works.

Exactly. The USA is more like “Donate a few million to my ballroom/TrumpCoin/etc. and I’ll cancel the shakedown”.

That’s actually the point that RFK Jr is challenging when it comes to food and meds.

I can actually see someone making an argument that perhaps the excessively sugared, etc. products are bad enough for public health that they should be restricted/prohibited. I’m under the (possibly mistaken) impression, for example, that one of the reasons that American-style breakfast cereals are typically not available in the UK or Europe is that regulators would object on public health grounds.

However, the US arguably has more of a libertarian / laissez-faire tradition. If the market demands unhealthy stuff, the market gets unhealthy stuff. Decisions of whether to indulge in stuff that’s bad for you are left to individuals (or parents). And that’s what RFK Jr. is conflicting with in this particular case.

And I don’t mind his concern and his saying that too much sugar is bad (it is). This is more the Surrgeon General’s job, though.
What I do mind is his being in a position to ban or regulate anything, as he is unqualified for the job.

And, more to Rastiln’s point about the highly-connected profiting off government actions and inactions.

What makes him unqualified for his job? Or perhaps, what does he lack that the job requires?

a health background imo (isn’t he some kind of environmental lawyer by trade?)

A basic concept of risk. Doesn’t seem to understand it one bit. Seems to exaggerate trivial risks and dismiss serious ones.

I think those are your preferences for someone in his position, but not actual requirements.

To cut to the chase, the role is a political appointee that is expected to align the agencies that report to him to Trump’s agenda. This is why Trump picked him. Trump cares more about conspiracy theories than facts and science, so this makes RFKJ immensely qualified.

Congress gets to confirm the pick, so he also needs to meet their view on qualifications. They just rubber stamp everything that Trump does as they support his agenda.

fixed.

I’m sorry, but your response makes your question inane. You basically defined qualified as nom by pres, approved by senate. Not exactly what I thought you were asking.

whether they adopted it for that purpose, or got the job by supporting him to begin with, its all the same.

Yup, I set a trap on that one, that was the point.

Congress has ceded its authority to Trump. Each and every one of them told us they would do this in their campaigns. The more we come to terms with this and realize how important the job of Congress actually is, the sooner we can get better government.

Lol, you caught a fool in your trap.:joy:

I thought it was an ask about why RFKjr might be rejected by a thoughtful nonpartisan.

Tragic. In CA.

Better than getting autism.

On a 2023 episode of the Highwire discussing their legal victory, [female co-founder] Magee told [male film producer] Bigtree that many of Mississippi’s legislators were “misogynistic and paternalistic” and had dismissed their movement as “a bunch of emotional mothers”, but the lawmakers took Bigtree seriously.

“We did find that they were more receptive to you,” she said.

“I had never done that before,” he said on the episode. “When the day was all over, I would say that my life was changed forever … Who would have ever thought talking to politicians would be fun or interesting? But the whole game of sizing them up, trying to figure out what things they cared about and find that door that you could open up into the conversation was really interesting.”

Interesting. The anti-health group of moms wasn’t able to get any traction with politicians in Mississippi until they sent in a man with no health credentials who had never been involved with politics. The politicians immediately took the man seriously.
