A brain worm's vision for public health

What is the number next to the state?

Asking for a friend…

Alphabetical order. But you probably already knew that.

If you download it into a csv/spreadsheet, that number will also be the code for that state/DC, etc.

It’s useful for lookups

When I do other “group by” it will do similar parentheticals, because it’s often simpler to use the codes for lookup keys.

Read an interesting guest essay in the NYT today. The author, a healthy foods advocate, pointed out something I hadn’t considered. JFKjr has mobilized the MAHA Moms against highly processed foods. They are in alignment now with their left of center advocates. No doubt, the JFKjr takes on many other issues are wacky (vaccines), but he isn’t all wrong on the diet stuff. Here is an excerpt from that essay. It lists the solid red states that have state legislatures taking some pretty impressive steps in the right direction, imo.

Summary

Nowhere is this clearer than in state legislatures. West Virginia made waves this year by passing a sweeping statewide ban on seven common synthetic food dyes. In May, Texas lawmakers, with the support of Mr. Kennedy, passed a bill that mandates warning labels on food packages for dozens of commonly used additives and ingredients.

A similar labeling bill was just signed into law in Louisiana. That measure also bans certain additives and dyes from school meals and requires restaurants to post a disclaimer alerting customers to the use of seed oils, which Mr. Kennedy has suggested are poisonous. (Nutrition experts say that seed oils are healthier than animal fats, such as the beef tallow Mr. Kennedy has promoted.) Six states have now been granted waiversfrom the Department of Agriculture to restrict purchases of sugar-sweetened beverages in their food stamp programs; some are also restricting candy.

In brief, the MAHA Moms carry a hefty amount of clout. Heretofore, Rs in Congress have toed the party line on federal diet issues. The food industry lobby is strong.
But what a dilemma. Do they take the advice of the lobbyists, at the risk of facing off against Trump+MAHA Moms? That’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. The food industry can make or break you in a rural, farm oriented district.

Her point is that the winds have never been so favorable to actually get some labeling changes and stop calling Doritos and a Mountain Dew a reasonable school lunch. Could JFKjr actually end up being a net positive force? Food for thought.

It will indeed be a good thing if folks unite on improving diet here. A big proportion of Americans have poor diets. At the same time RFKJr actively promotes french fries and Coke as MAHA, so I am not sure he’s truly heading down that path. Also, these same Moms mocked Michelle Obama for promoting healthy diets and wanting to take away our freedoms.

A lot of their kids likely graduated a few years ago. It’s been around 9 years since Obama’s been president and many of the kids in question were at least a few years into their school career when this was happening. I’d think it’s a different cohort of moms.

Did you read the excerpt? When Louisiana and West Virginia pass actual legislation, your spidey senses should be tingling.
In politics, every so often you join hands with people where just a single issue is on the line. strange bedfellows and all that.

Keep the legislation simple, laser focused on methods to create an environment headed in the right direction. Don’t cloud it up with stuff about guns, taxation, or whatever else you think needs attention. Take the win.

This.
I will tell YOU what you should eat. Not the other way around!!”

Anyway, I think people should be informed as best as possible (a non-political Government function), but be allowed to make their own decisions (#Murica).
MAHA Moms, instead of beating on other people’s choices, should recognize the advantage their kids have over the less-healthy. Unless, of course, they are shitty Moms who cannot control what their kids eat.

Sounds about right. Government doesn’t actually want to solve problems, because then they can’t be talking points anymore. (But additionally in this case it’s also RFK Jr. and wtf.)

An RFK ally is saying that the plan is to nix the COVID vaccine entirely

Spiteful move to get around professional medical organizations recommendations in favor of vaccination. Operation Warpspeed was the one success of Trump 1.0.

New studies on covid are pointing to the viral infection directly reducing your immunity to other pathogens.

They are basically going to guarantee that winter flu season combines with covid surges and measles surges to create a very high seasonal mortality and morbidity toll.

Looks like they are trying to save OASDI.

I feel like that would lead to a lawsuit from Pfizer et al. that’s guaranteed to become a landmark Supreme Court decision.

He’s getting rid of all of them?

Might have to do some medical tourism just to stay safe.

If you don’t measure it, it doesn’t exist.
