2026 FIFA World Cup Discussion

Could look at the number of Spanish players on RM. Only 7 to choose from.
Carvajal
Garcia, G
Asencio
Carreras
Ceballos
Garcia, F
Huijsen

Important to note that RM has plenty of players on the rosters of other countries.

Looking at the Groups…

If both the US and Iran finish second in their respective groups, the two countries would meet on July 3rd at Dallas Stadium in Texas.

Now that would be interesting.

Happy to see that Jesse Marsch has been contracted as Canada’s coach for another four years. He deserves to get to develop his huge contingent of excellent young players. The 2030 WC should be better for Canada than 2026.

Looking at the sched:
USA play TUR 6/25 at 10PM EDT??
(I’ll be in that time zone then.)
I mean, I realize there are six matches that day, and the others are farther east than Inglewood, but this is the host!
I can’t stay up too late, cuz we have to leave early the next morning. That means not going to a fanfest an hour away, then fighting traffic at 9:30PM.
So, I guess we can go to a local pub.
Or, go to the FanFest for a few hours (matches start at 4PM local), then drive back to our hotel to watch the USA match.

EDIT:
This is why living in Pacific Time, with something to record or save early-hour programming is helpful.

Something I can agree with tRump on:

When asked recently about tickets going for $1,000 and higher, President Donald Trump told The New York Post, “I wouldn’t pay it either, to be honest with you.”

They cut off the part where he says, “Someone would take me for free, so I don’t care about the American people. Getting me a free ticket means No Nukes for Iran. If you are against me going for free, then you are FOR Nukes for Iran. Traitor! Thank you for your attention to this matter!!”

Totally agree. This time zone is so much better for sports viewing, especially for someone like me who follows Eastern teams in several sports.

Classy move by female MEX President.

Detractors, of course:

The president’s announcement generated mixed reactions in Mexico. While some considered it a commendable decision, others criticized it, arguing that it was a missed opportunity to promote the country.

Oh, the president of the country’s presence is needed in the special box reserved for the President, so she can, what, “schmooze” with oil company execs to “promote the country”? It is the freakin’ WC.

There always are but I 100% support her.

The opener would have been sold out ages ago at previous WCs.

It’s good to wait.
Every WC from now on will be like this.
Sticky Prices Theory.

More FIFA ticket shenanigans

Ooh, maybe they will tarp off some sections.

“We’d rather lose money not selling the tickets than lose money selling tickets. Because in the latter, people will be happier.”

It is possible that they “sold” the tickets to a broker like stubhub or TM to resell. Hopefully at a deep discount.
6/12 tix on Stubhub start at $943. Pass.
Site called “SeatPick” has over 4000 “VIP” tix for SoFi over all of the matches. Lowest tix are $643. Pass.

I won’t even think about going for more than $100. My wife tells me I’m out of touch with the pricing of things these days (concerts are her thing), but it’s my money I’m touching and my experience that I am valuing.
And my idea about staying at my son’s place in SaMo (Santa Monica) is out as he and wife are out of the country, and I don’t have a key.

MEX had 78K (or 70K) fans show at the Rose Bowl, which is not a stadium used for this World Cup. (Some might have been AUS fans.)
Too old. Too grassy. Too outdoorsy.
Less than 58K in Charlotte for USMNT. Fits 75K.

Not sure what this ranking does, except cause people to post about it on their message boards… wait…

And here come the prediction models…

GS has Spain as favourite.

Seeing the US play Iran in the first round of knockouts would be…interesting.

(And thanks for reminding me that I still need to decide whether to subscribe to Fox Sports to stream the matches in English, or make do with my existing subscriptions to stream them in Spanish.)

The fleecing continues…

How do you guys put up with this?

The nickle and diming would create a huge pushback over here in Europe.

In the US, at least, by law we’re obliged to consume only overpriced beer-flavored fizzy water in our large sports venues.

(Note that those are prices for American mass-produced “beer”.)

If you want less obscenely-priced concessions to go with your sport ball, you go to high school sporting events.
