At least the Eagles managed to tie the Pens
Colorado 8, Los Angeles 4 (F)
Excluding goals scored on the Colorado power play: Colorado 4, Los Angeles 2
I am surprised that Goalie Goals are not more commonplace (I would think a goalie gets pulled in virtually every game with more than a goal difference) and was there a rule change that none happened before 1979?
I’m sure a couple goalies tried, but it just never happened. Toronto’s Gary Smith was one of them, and he also tried early in his career to skate up ice to try and score; that ended December 21, 1966 when he tried it and got wiped out and hurt, and the NHL subsequently put in a rule that goalies couldn’t play the puck beyond the red line.
Billy Smith’s goal in 1979 was the “last player to touch the puck” variety. Ron Hextall in 1987 was the first to shoot it directly into the other team’s net. Only 2 goalie goals have been scored via direct shot on goal earlier than 58:48 (Shesterkin’s last night was at 57:26), Shesterkin’s appears to be the first to be scored by shooting directly into the net with the other team down by more than 2 goals. If anything, I’m surprised there hasn’t been more than 7 since 2019-20 or whenever the we’re down 3 goals with 7 minutes to play, but teh analytics say pull the goalie so let’s do it approach was embraced by coaches.
Edmonton (1-0-1) goaltending through 2 games: 6.43 GAA, .711 SV%.
Most goals scored in a season, team: 426, EDM 1985-86
Most goals allowed in a season, team: 446, WSH 1974-75
This Oilers team might break both of those.
The next time the owners complain about having to spend money and demand the players take more concessions on contracts, the NHLPA should remind them “we didn’t make you lob a 6-year, $43.2 million contract at a guy with 14 NHL games played, who you intentionally stuck in the AHL for practically all of the last 2 years.”
Same thing with Bettman’s complaining about players using their NTCs. There’s a really simple solution: GMs go somewhere - maybe back to kindergarten - and learn how to use the word no.
What’s mind blowing is that Igor is tied for the team lead in goals scored…
Watched Colorado dismantle St. Louis last night. That Nathan McKinnon guy might end up being vaguely decent before his career is over.
Also: even if you want to argue that Jordan Binnington is no longer a good goalie and point to the 2 goals he gave up trying to handle the puck, the ~31 minutes before that illustrate why he’s not as bad as you want to argue - because every goalie in the league is going to struggle when the Avs are buzzing like that and the defense is porous af, especially when Binnington is in net.
And now Igor has an assist - just 44 more to go to get Barasso’s record
Enjoy Alex Ovechkin while you can. This season will be the last one for him in the NHL.
Next job: Minister of Sport in Russia?
16 games tonight. Chance for the Flyers to finally break through after a franchise-record 0-5-2 start that pretty accurately describes how they’ve been playing so far.
Your early points leader: Connor McDavid (13), which … not a surprise.
Your early goals leaders: Sebastian Aho (CAR), Kirill Kaprizov (MIN), Nick Schmaltz (UTA), Kyle Connor (WPG) and Evan Bouchard (EDM), who currently needs 24 more to become the 10th defenseman in NHL history with 30 goals in a season, 34 more to become the 3rd with 40 goals in a season, and 42 more to tie Paul Coffey’s league record from 1985-86.
