2024 Presidential Debates Thread

I’m living in Newfoundland and fantasize about moving to Halifax.

I’m about the last person that I’d choose as a speechwriter, but here’s my wording anyway…

"I believe that Donald Trump returning to the White House would be the worst possible result of the 2024 presidential election. His personality is toxic, and his policies are random sound bites. I’ve been running because I believed I’ve had the best chance to beat him.

I know that the biggest concern that people have about me is my age. I now see that concern is too big to overcome.

Therefore, I am asking other Democrats who believe they could to better to step forward and make their case to the American people. If one or more of them get a positive response, I intend to release any delegates pledged to me and encourage them to use their best judgement in choosing a different candidate.

Of course this is a difficult personal decision for me. But, the stakes in this election are just too high to let my feelings get in the way of the best future for the United States."

I suspect there is a version of that floating around, and a weekend of deciding what to do next.

I’m new here. But it is clear to me that neither one of these ass clowns are presidential material

I don’t think anything about Cali’s current state is an endorsement of Gavin Newsom. All Trump would have to do is say “Look at his state. Is THAT what you want?”

Buttigieg is photogenic and articulate. But he has not done well as Transportation Secretary and was the mayor of a small city. Trump’s companies had bigger budgets.

If you realize those are Fox News talking points and that once you put either on a stage next to Trump (or Biden), they will look fantastic.

The daughter of one of my best friends abandoned Toronto and bought a house on the southern part of Nova Scotia. Charming area and she needs very little income to live. My father-in-law was a dean at Dalhousie in Halifax for about 15 years and we always enjoyed our visits there. Halifax was a great city.

We spent a few weeks in July in Nfld a few years ago when the CIA had its AGM there. Loved St.John’s and the other parts of Nfld. Not sure I could take the winters there though.

Honestly think that he was following the coaching there. Let Biden look old and just call it out a little. When your opponent is damaging himself you step out of the way and let him.

I thought the two weeks a year that Newfoundland is nice generally fall in August.

Also, remember that Trump is perceived to have lost ground among the swing voters in past debates by talking over the other candidate and generally behaving badly.

He would have been coached to mind his p’s and q’s as, at least going into the debate, those swing voters in the swing states were the ones who were going to be deciding the election.

Canada isn’t that easy to get permission to live in. Not unless you are young and and in a field they want more of.

Hey I wanted Halley to get the GOP nomination. For the good of the nation I was hoping for a meteor strike on the debate site. (Getting the CNN headliners would’ve been a nice bonus. MSNBC would’ve been too much to hope for.)

That was painful to watch. A lying toxic narcissist on one side and a guy for whom a campaign is a form of elder abuse on the other.

That does not make Gavin Newsom or Pete Buttigieg a better candidate. Buttigieg is too busy with paternity leave and pronouns to worry about docks being backed up, train derailments, out of date air control systems, or fixing Boeing. Newsome runs a state with massive homeless, drug, and budget issues. But at least he’s busy making the electric grid less reliable when he wasn’t flouting his own COVID lockdown rules.

Rude!

“here, let me ignore your comment about fox news talking points by bringing up even more fox news talking points” is not very convincing. We established we have old and crazy as available options. “Neither of those but might have some different views on policy” is an incredible improvement.

This is just a hunch, but I bet you have lists like this prepared for every famous Democrat.

And if any person became a famous Democrat, you would soon have a similar list put together.

…or unless you’re a US or Mexican citizen who is an actuary working for a company with Canadian offices. Then a work permit is trivially easy to get.

Alternatively, most US citizens, as long as they aren’t doing “Canadian work” can stay in Canada (albeit without access to Medicare) as long as they at least flagpole the border once every six months.

(Admittedly, I haven’t kept up with where Canada currently stands on foreigners buying residential property in Canada. I know there was a moratorium for a couple of years unless you had at least a work permit.)

Fair enough. At this point the Southpark Turd Sandwich vs Giant Douche might be an improvement.

No. Buttigieg was a POTUS candidate so I paid attention to him and his performance as Transport Sec. Newsome has been running a quiet campaign as a Biden backup, So, again, payed some attention. I have no idea about the other Governor someone mentioned earlier.
