2024 Presidential Debates Thread

Vance - we have protections in the law.

Why doesn’t Walz just say yes that law is ACA?

True, but he certainly wouldn’t be the only one to try. Bob Dole and Walter Mondale were both nominated. Dan Quayle tried. Sarah Palin was discussed.

For that matter Trump is currently trying to become the first ex-President to win the Presidency in 132 years.

While Walz is giving a good actuarial argument on the individual mandate, he’s forgotten that many Americans don’t like to be told what they have to do.

Vance is totally making up 100% of his ACA comments. Total, unadulterated bullshit.

Cool. Let’s wrap up with the 2020 election.

i think we should debate those issues peacefully before someone summons a mob to murder me

its really rich says vance. whats really rich is he is here instead of pence bc (a) trump wanted pence killed by the mob and (b) bc of that he won’t endorse trump.

“Did Trump lose the election?”

…deflection rather than answer.

damn it. “fire in a crowded theater” is not the law. (thanks, popehat)

calling out why pence isn’t onstage!

I also appreciate the line “damning nonanswer”.

That being said, Vance raising the censorship concerns will resonate well in some circles.

He’s like a fox news talking point generator.

Vance has given Fox News a lot of material to portray Team Trump in a favorable / non-loony light.

That might make this debate a little more relevant than the normal VP debate.

Damn. Nice to see the candidates being cordial after a debate. I’ve missed that.

closing statement is the one talking point that didn’t come up - energy costs?

being the VP is not the seat to drive policy. why isn’t the question what policy he will drive even if it isn’t trump’s plan? stay alive and out of the fray is the VP’s job. the persistent argument is a misunderstanding of the role.

vance wrapped it up v well expressing gratitude to be in the position and hoping people vote.

is the handshale discussion focusing on a discussion of the walz son crying in public and being atypical and the vance kids being brown and not real americans?

Walz could have nailed him on the tariffs discussion and connected it to the Haitian immigrants doing jobs that americans don’t want to do. “If we put tariffs then we will need to make this stuff and guess what? Americans dont want to make that stuff. I guess we’ll have to bring in even more people from Haiti! Think of the cats, Vance, think of the cats.”

Boom

its crazy - i watched walz many nights in tough interviews in the floyd aftermath. why was he coming off even slightly flustered here? (he is always very caffeinated)

True, but I think had he done that, he would have been dinged by the swing voters for ruining a rare sane moment in 2024 campaign.

Intense debate prep is exhausting?

Vance is playing an easier game, probably just recited a bunch of talking points. Walz was writing stuff down trying to be coherent and meaningful. Vance is a skilled politician in the sense that he understands how to control perception. Most people watching probably thought Vance won just based on demeanor. Walz looked agitated and nervous. That being said, I don’t think this debate will have any real impact.

Vance is boring as hell to be honest. Dont see him doing very well in the MAGA world that values entertainment and triggering the libs.

Observation from the NYT live blog:

There will be the fodder for the late night comedians.

(NYT bloggers are essentially saying Vance won, but VP debates don’t matter much.)
